Cisco VPN struggle (still ongoing).

I downloaded the latest available Cisco VPN Client V5.0.06.0160 and i still have issues connecting to my Astaro Gateway.
It seems to be an ongoing struggle for me to get it working.

I am able to connect to the Astaro gateway, i can ping the astaro box. I can ping the Ip address of my dsl router but can't ping my internal network. I can ping ip addresses on the internet but name resolving doesn't work as dns is my internal dns server which i can't ping.


I know i have posted several messages about this subject but i can't see what i am doing wrong.I appreciate any suggestions about this.

The issue i have isn't cisco vpn client related as i have dns issues from the beginning i started using it.The only way of browsing the internet is configuring the proxy settings in the browser.

But name resolving for other applications like outlook doesn't work, or from the command prompt

Astaro information:

Firmware version:  7.502 
Pattern version:  11654 
Last check:  27 minutes ago 
 

Any ideas what i need to change to get it working

    Instead of messing with cisco why not use the built in SSL vpn that astaro provides?  It even provides the client..AND it's one port...that's it.  No tricks.. just easy.

    I agree about not using the Cisco client if at all possible.  Especially with Windows, the L2TP over IPsec client is included, is easy to switch between split- and full-tunnel and is fully supported by Astaro.

    ok that could be an option but when i tried to install the astaro vpn client , my pc didn't starup normally, i had to use a restore point to get my network connectivity back.As i also want to use it on my company laptop so i can connect to my home network when abroad and i have good experience with cisco hard- / soft-ware i really would like to use the cisco vpn client

    Instead of trying to find an solution , go for the easy (prooven working) concept is not how i would like to make it working.

    i really hope astaro will implement the dns server issue on their next release of ASG as the product is very very good.

    Madifor, in an exchange with someone here last year, I learned that VPN clients mess with the tcp/ip stack, so you really can't have two running at the same time.  That pointed me to the solution for a problem I'd been having.  Now, when I need to VPN to someone, I always "repair" my internet connection to be sure that the "new" VPN client finds what it expects.  Does that solve your problem?

    Short update: pushing of DNS servers will work in V8. Hang on for the beta which be released within the next months.

    You need to use your network's dns server not try to use one that's not tied into the central authentication system like Astaro dns server.  You don't want to go for the easy and proven solution?  That's odd.  goto openvpn.net and go to the community section.  download the latest client.  Then grab only the zip file form the astaro machine.  drop that into openvpn's config area and you are good to go.  Unless something is really messed up with either your vpn config or your system or your network this should simply just work.

    My wife is saddled with the cisco client and dns and other things work fine.  I think you have a mis configuration somewhere.
