VPN is too flakey for real use

I'm quite honestly sick and tired of how flakey the vpn stuff is. I can connect in sometimes, and then it just goes down for no reason. There is no rhyme or reason behind why this doesn't work. This evening I was connected in just fine, then it went down. Now I can't connect at all and there is basically nothing I can do to figure out what the problem is. Luckily VPN is the only thing that is massively unstable. Everything else is rock solid.

1) Is there a way on the CLIENT END to find out what is going on? (windows xp stock vpn client) I'm currently sitting at home wondering what the heck is going on and I have no way to get the stupid thing to email me logs, nor do I have any tools to figure out what it's all pissed off about on the client end.

2) Is there another chunk of client software that may make things happier? Where is this magical astaro client?

I've been as happy as a little girl with our astaro firewall until I've tried to consistently use VPN. Lack of connects for known good setups and mysterious drops with only the prayer method of getting it to connect in again. Now I'm extremely unhappy regarding my astaro firewall. Please make me happy again.    ast 120 v 6.103

    I am willing to try anything to get this to work.

    I had l2tp using the xp client running, every now and then. If I throw out this approach what combination of astaro server settings and astaro client settings do I need to set to get this junk to work? I've had it.

    This is a 120 running 6.103. I'm tired of this flakey setup. Flakey, flakey, flakey, doesn't work. Doesn't work. Doesn't work.

    6.105 is WAY more stable. Then email started puking tonight and there was a 6.106 waiting patiently. Woot!

    Much happier tonight.

    We installed Astaro (250-license) about a year ago and went through the same frustrations you are experiencing. Win2K, WinXP (and various other) VPN clients are flakey at best. The connect, then they drop out, or they make your computer crash, etc. However, since we started using the Astaro Secure Client, NO problems at all! I've been able to connect reliably from behind all kinds of routers, with all types of modems (GPRS, GSM, dial-up), cable, ADSL, etc. Never a problem; never a drop-out. I can confidently say "DUMP the WinXP client". Even if you get it to work now, Microsoft will release a Windows patch and it will stop working later - there are no exceptions to this rule. Once you're connected with the Astaro Secure Client, there are also no comms problems such as unsupported protocols, etc. We also use voice over it, and it never falters. PS. I don't work for Astaro - I'm just an admirer of good & reliable software, especially having dealt with Windows for so long.
