PPTP VPN for dummies ...

I'm new to ASL (started working in the company this week) and my first task is to get the co workers to connect from home (DSL).  I have set up the users and the PPTP connection according to the pptp roadwarrior how-to but (not to my suprise to be honest), I can't get connected ... (error 678, the external computer does not respond)
Could someone explain the different settings I need to change?
Goal is to be able to log in from home (dsl connection) to check mail (exchange 2000) and acces the file server on a W2000 network.
Which packet filters do i need to set for instance?
Sorry if this is a stupid question ...  [:S]  

ps. ASL is version 3.2 do I need to upgrade this?

    Guys I should have explained myself better, but I would only use remote desktop after the vpn connection had already been established. Also I would run outlook web access within a ssl session in a dmz.

    I stand corrected.

    Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol is not really encrypted very well.     

    I have yet to meet a Windows machine that I could't crack into.
    Which is why I hide all my Windows machines in behind my ASL box.
    I have far more faith in Astaro's security effort using Linux,
    then I have in Microsoft's security efforts to date.

    Update

    I installed all updates and am now running 3.221
    PPTP now works *most* of the time, about 6/10 times.  The other times, I get error 678, the external computer does not respond).  
    When this happens, there's no entry in the pptp log files.  
    Does this mean the adsl router between the internet and the astaro box *occasionaly* blocks the connection?   Could this me related to MTU size on my side?  (reduced it to 1000 to no avail).

    Maybe upgrading to 4.021 or 5 might help [:)]

    Well, ASL v3 is a bit too old for me to fully fathom, I got my introduction to ASL with v4.017. Since then I have been looking at the ASL v5 betas, up to v4.744. To me, old software is like old newspapers, it no longer holds my attention.

    It is unlikely that you need to set your MTU any lower than 1492.
    I don't think that would be your problem.
