Xbox Live and ASL

Any updates on this?

I have a xbox 360.  Unfortunately I haven't played any live multiplayer games since the ASG was installed 2 Months ago.  I have played single player, and it signs me into xbox live successfully.
I will try to play tonight and test it through the ASG.

Anyone up for Gears of War?

Hi, im running the home user version of asl, and i love it ! However, I bought an xbox 360 and it cant connect to xbox live through astaro.

In the checks that the xbox does it passes on the interface,ip addresss,dns, and fail's on MTU. According to Micro$oft the MTU needs to be above 1364 and my inside MTU is at 1500 and Outside is at 1492 on astaro.

If I use pppo-e with my dsl modem (Which astaro normally uses on the outside NIC) and only the xbox  its fine. So astaro is clearly the problem.

Any ideas?

What kind of packet filter rules are you using?  When I was running v6.3 I opened all traffic to/from my xbox and had no problems.  Not that I'm a fan of doing that, but that's the only way I could figure out to make things work other than openning specific ports, which I was unable to find specifics on at the time.

With Xbox 360 live you will need to NAT some ports back into the unit in order to fully connect.

I find the following site useful when I'm not sure about the port I need to forward for certain games and such:

This shows us that the Xbox Live 360  needs TCP 3074 and UDP 88,3074

I'm bumping this thread as I've just setup my first ASG7 install and am trying to sort out Xbox Live as well.  I have the ASG PC between my cable modem and my router; DHCP is handled by the router.  For the sake of completeness, the ASG PC is set to 192.168.1.100 and the router is set to 192.168.1.1, using the ASG PC as a gateway and primary DNS.

I started by setting my Xbox 360 with a static IP of 192.168.1.200 and created a new Network in Definitions > Networks called Xbox 360, type Host, address 192.168.1.200.

I then created two new rules in Network Security > Packet Filter > Rules:

Service: Any
Destination: Any
Action: Allow

Source: Any
Service: Any
Destination: Xbox 360
Action: Allow

In doing so, I think I've placed the Xbox 360 in a type of DMZ.  Am I right about that?  I plan on just installing a second NIC in the ASG PC and directly connecting the 360 to it, using the same rules.

At any rate, the "Test Xbox Live Connection" function on the game console now passes all tests, including MTU -- before creating these rules, the test would fail at MTU just like the OP was experiencing.

The only problem now is that the test shows NAT as "Moderate"; previously, when I had the 360 in the router's DMZ (before I started using ASG), it was "Open", which allows for best performance.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

I'll update here if I come up with any solutions.

I am a new user of the ASG, replacing my trusty, but aging ipcop installation.  I've been very happy with it so far, but also having issues getting XBox LIVE working properly.

I've made packet filters for my xbox to/from 'any', and 'any' protocol.  Made NAT rules for tcp/udp 3072, udp 88 from 'any' to the external interface to be routed to my 360.

The tests are returning 'moderate' NAT, which may be OK, but gives Halo 3 fits for matchmaking at times.  I've heard of LIVE having service issues of late, but even though the connection test passes, I still cannot connect.  Not sure if that is a ASG issue or a LIVE one today.

If anybody can give me some good filter and NAT rules to get LIVE working properly, I'd really appreciate it!

I followed fatwreck15's set-up exactly on my ASG and everything works great when I use my XBOX360's "test netwrok config" tool. In fact if I run the test first thing after powering it on... everything is great during that gaming session.

The problem is if I don't run the "network test" when I first power it ON it won't connect to the XBOX LIVE servers at all. 

Seems like there is something still missing that the ASG is still blocking when I just try to sign-in directly. The XBOX's "Network TEST" must do an initial hand-shake through another port(?) that then allows the fatwreck15's NAT and Packet Filter rules to to work fine. But just turning on the console and trying to log-in directly does not invoke that hand-shake... so it fails. 

What is missing... I am so puzzled. 

I have tried viewing the various "Live Log" screens while signing in and also while doing the "Network Test" and I haven't seen anything obvious. 

Has anyone else experienced this behavior?

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi All, 

Perhpas i can share my finding on this topic...I also require further assistance please since my xbox 360 is still not working properly. 

I followed fatwreck15's suggestions above and created the packet filter and NAT rules....i however saw that some additional rules were required. 

Please see Description of Firewall Ports for Xbox LIVE for additional ports required. I added those and still had one problem left..."live signin not available" during "downloading updates" when you first connect. 

I have a long cat5 cable from a router to my xbox on the other side of the house on the 2nd floor - so i though that was the problem. I plugged it into the router directly and that made no difference. 
I added a rule to allow ALL traffic and ALL services to my xbox IP and that also did not solve the problem. 
I then bypassed astaro completelly and plugged the xbox directly into the adsl modem and configured the xbox accordingly. Now it all workered perfectly. 

This means there are some additional astaro configurations required? 
My problem is i pick up absolutely nothing on the packet filter logs i.t.o traffic not allowed by astaro? 

Can you please assist with this please.
