Restore Reporting Logs

Hey Folks,

I recently replaced the hard drive in my Astaro box by installing fresh, updating and restoring from my latest backup. Unfortunately, the restore was without the Hardware, Network Usage, and Network Security Reporting that would be a nice to have. I still have the old Astaro installation on the previous hard drive intact.

    I wonder if it would be possible to backup the postgres database via ssh to accomplish this in a crude but potential way. Any thoughts?
    Yes, you can do this, but it is unsupported.  From that perspective, you'd be better off just using syslog.

    You're probably right. You lose the one stop shop all in one Astaro benefit, but I do suppose you get to maintain a history in whichever third party syslog viewer provides the desired detail. I'll look into that as well. Thanks for the direction.

    No problem.  As an addendum to my last post, almost anything done via the shell is considered unsupported unless directed by Astaro Support and can nullify your support agreement.  If you do decide to go the route of copying the database, and are a licensed business user with support, start up a support ticket (either directly with Astaro Support of through your reseller, depending on your support level) and get the green light from them first in case things go sideways.

    I appreciate the advice. I'm running with just a Home License, and nothing is so mission critical that if it did go sideways, I couldn't just reinstall anyway, especially if it were my grubby paws causing the issue. 

    However, to be a bit more on the safe side, I was going to install Astaro on a Sand Box and test the potential possibilities that way instead of tampering with the box of magic that keeps me online.

    Reinstallation is normally only needed if the NICs models change.

    I was going to say earlier that you could clone the disk with Ghost or Gdisk instead of re-installing on a new disk, but since your old install was acting wonky, it wouldn't have been a good idea.

    Another option for you would be to use some sort of netflow-based tools for monitoring and graphing your network (independently of Astaro). e.g. Argus
    or similar.

    Yeah Barry, believe me, if I could have gotten away with just cloning block for block from one drive to another, I would have. I learned a month long lesson not to use a Flash Drive in place of an archaic but trusty rotational Hard Drive.

    On the bright side, however, it did give me incentive to ask a few questions, learn a bit more about Astaro as well as support related enhancements. Not all bad from my perspective.
