Squid filled hard disk leading to shutdown !

Monday I received a lot of these messages:

WARNING - not enough space:
9% free - (23 MByte) on device: /dev/hda8 - mounted on /var/chroot-squid -
Astaro Security Linux  1.824

HDD was being eaten up until...

ALARM - not enough space:
5% free - (13 MByte) on device: /dev/hda8 - mounted on /var/chroot-squid -
SYSTEM HALT - ONLY CONSOLE ACCESS!

What caused squid to eat all the hard disk space ?  Shouldnt squid have some kind of limit on how much space it can use?  This problem caused me a heap of trouble at work since on the day in question I was at home sick with the flu.  Please tell me what is causing this behaviour.  I suspect the hard disk total size is not big enough ?  (2GB)

    It is squid version 2 according to the top of the .conf pages.

    Can someone working with the firewall please respond?  I have changed all the settings and it isn't working.  I am going to reinstall because of this but I need to be able to make sure it doesn't happen to me again.
