My SMTP Rules are not being applied !!!

Hello all,

I have setup my SMTP rules for example not to allow any message that contains "football" to be sent. But my mail client (Outlook express) is sending these messages ignoring my rule ! Any idea ?

    CORRECTION: Outbound email is scanned by the Expression filter.

    Outbound mail is not scanned for spam, only anti-virus scans are done.

    Both AntiVirus and AntiSpam scans are done on inbound email.

    Outbound mail is AV scanned if you check 'Scan relayed (outgoing) messages' at the bottom of the 'Relaying' tab.  The explanation that Astaro provides should not refer to "content scanner" as that leads to confusion - the explanation should be changed to reflect the fact that anti-spam scanning is not done on outbound emails.

    I see, thank you.

    I have another case and before I dig into it I want to know if it's possible.

    You know when you send from server to server you use SMTP as outgoing and incoming as well. Can I apply the rules on data coming from a server ( say hotmail ) to my mail server ?

    p.s. I don't really have an exchange server, it's just a software that works to manage incoming and outgoing emails.

    Show a picture of your 'Routing' tab.  I think the answer to your last question is: "Yes, that's the way the Astaro SMTP Proxy works.  It accepts inbound emails, acting as a smarthost for your internal mail server.

    Hi Bob,

    Not sure if I misinterpreted something but outgoing email can be scanned for SPAM / keywords.
    It is configured via the Mail Security / SMTP / Relaying menu, then by selecting "Scan relayed (outgoing) messages" (pic attached).
    The exchange server/email client must send outgoing email via the Astaro solution, outgoing email will be scanned for any keywords you have defined under the Anti-Spam tab / expressions list.  If an email contains a banned expression the email will not be sent and will be moved to the Mail Manager with all the incoming SPAM.

    Has worked like a charm for me.

    Hi, Darren -I had an entertaining exchange last year with one of our friends here, and we proved that, since 7.3 (I think), outbound emails are no-longer scanned for anti-spam.  Up until then, you are correct that sent mails were scanned by the anti-spam engine; that's why I complained above that Astaro needs to change the explanation of what it means to scan relayed messages.

    Musab, It looks to me like you need to get rid of the DNAT, then, on the 'Routing' tab, change 'Route by:' to "Static host list" and put "Mail1/222" in the 'Host list'.

    Perhaps outgoing emails are not going through the full spam screening but they are definitely being trapped if the contents of the outgoing email appear in the banned expression list.
    Just tried it by sending several emails out with banned expressions and they were captured by Astaro. :-)

    Darren, I just tried it again.  Create an entry in the 'Expression list', [Apply], copy the expression into the subject and body of an email and send it to my email at yahoo.  Goes right through.  Here's an extract from my log:

    After receiving it at Yahoo, I replied back to my business address, and that email was indeed captured by Astaro because of the expression.

    Since you got an outbound email to stick in the quarantine, please show the lines from your SMTP log.
