Setup Advice- VMWare or Straight to Disk

Guys & Gals,
Need some advice on a home install. I am somewhat computer savvy.

Here are my Specs:
-Computer, quad core, 6 gb ram, and a second Intel Nic, mobo already has an intel Nic.
-Two Sophos AP50 (overkill) for our small house.
-1 NetGear 5 Port Gigabit Switch (GS105) model.
-Connecting two computers wired, 2 phones and 1 tablet wirelessly. Sometimes visitors so Guest Wifi

Want to run Sophos UTM Home and be able to login VPN SSL remotely and have access to my home network and files. I am really security conscious so I am setting up Two Factor on everything.

I also have a license of VMware Exsi or I could install direct on the hard drive.

So can anyone offer a Best Install Configuration. I am not sure if I should buy a better Switch? VMware Exsi install Sophos UTM? Direct install to disk? DMZ via VMware? No DMZ?

Pro's & Cons's.

@William,

Based on your recommendations, I am looking at either a i350 or Broadcom Netxtreme II 5709 Quad Ports. Which one will offer better performance?

Also will the Sophos UTM allow me to configure one port of the Quad NIC as a DMZ or does that require a 3rd NIC Card?

look at the list of hardware from intel i posted. i would go with the i340-t4 or the netextreme 2 quad. both will perform as well as the other.

yes there is..it is in the list i posted as currently serviced. The 350v2 averages 300-400 bucks where the 340 quad is sub-100

Do pay close attention to the PCI-e specs on all of the cards, some motherboards are more picky than others about backwards compatibility. That is how I would up using the older cards for my setup.

PCI-E X1 Slot:

-Intel I210-t1
-Broadcom NetExtremes (some of them)

-Intel® PRO/1000 PT (DONT BUY) 82571 chipset needs Linux driver update

-Intel I340
-Broadcom NetExtremes II
-Intel I350 (End of life) but works

Now my computer has one PCI Express x1.

So from what I have read my buying decisions are either a Intel i210t1 or Broadcom NetExtremes? Any other PCI-E X1 Card to consider? I looked at the Intel PRO/1000 PT but it seems to be hit or miss with the current chipset and Linux driver. Anyone????
