Hardware ideas for Software UTM

Hi Guys/Girls,

Going down the line of installing a software UTM in a production office environment which has about 60-70 devices including smartphones etc.

We are in the UK with BT Infinity 80/20 package with 5 static IP's.

I was looking at a low end Dell PowerEdge R220 which hereabout exceeds the Recommended Requirements from Sophos.

I think I need 4 NICs - LAN, WAN, DMZ/D-NAT to a static IP and a spare port for expansion in future.

We have multiple companies with different servers and setup which go down the same Internet Line.

    I would get one of us resellers directly involved..but at the 50 ip level an sg210 would probably do better AND might lower your costs.  Also the 2xx series ship with 8 gigs of ram and that is the realistic minimum for utm these days.  If you want to do your own hardware i would go with 8 gigs of ram minimum and the xeon cpu.  This gives you quite a bit of future proofing in terms of the cpu and you can always upgrade the ram to 16 gigs later.

    I have received quotes for the SG310 however my directors doesn't like the price tag. So I gave him the idea of the software appliance.

    Yes I did get the R220 in the end but I recommend running it on Hyper-V or ESXi. the base linux which sophos runs on does not like the hardware in the server.
