slow speeds even with hardware change

Hi All,

I just setup a Point to Point Wireless link between my place and a mate a street away (approx 150m line of site)

we have done testing with the wireless link between the houses and max out about 60-70mbit both ways.

so I was happy with that as I ordered a 100/40mbit link

Problem is the sophos seems to have an issue with anything over 40mbit... i can get 40/40 pretty much all the time (I have even changed hardware from an atom to an i7 as I thought that was the issue)

but as soon as I plug my lappy into Point2Point link and establish a PPPoE session I get 70/40 without sneezing.

I have tried a restore sophos, I have tried a fresh install without any extra features enabled, checked QoS, I have even tried another brand of NICs (Realtek/ Intel) and always I hit a bottleneck of 40/40....

another thing I tried was setting the auto-negotiation down to 100mb full duplex which sees the speed drop to 10/30 which is weird in itself

I am also testing from a cable plugged straight into the UTM (so nothing else on the network, and wifi disabled.)

any help would be appreciated.

    Interesting.  Is there anything interesting in the IPS log - maybe some Anti-UDP Flooding activity?

    Well during my lunch break I disabled everything other than WAF, VPN, SMTP and AV and also tried modifying the MTU size.

    if I get a chance tonight I will disable everything and test again.

    strange thing also is im also capping out my VPN connections around 2Mbit upload (download seems fine) (SSL and IPSEC) and wondering if this is somehow all connected :/

    try this without the wifi in the line. I know this is a long running thread but this is most likely a hardware problem somwehere in the chain.  UTM can easily stuff a 100 mega pipe especially with a high speed cpu(at least 2.5 ghz) and 4 gigs of ram.

    Wifi isn't the probem, all machines (besides laptops and ipads are connected via cable).

    I have confirmed that all the services were turned off last night, and I only got a 10mbit gain...so have a 20mbit loss somewhere...30mbit with all services active...

    So I can confirm the hardware can do 70/40 on a fresh install (not importing the config)

    So looks like I will now be rebuilding the config and testing every component one at a time before activating anything.

    Once complete will let everyone know [:)]

    you most assuredly have a misconfiguration somewhere.  The i7 most assuredly will not have any issue stuffing your pipes..[:)]

    well I may have solved the issue.

    will be confirming this long weekend...

    seems as I have recreated the WAN interface im now hitting around 55-60mbit continuously with IPS enabled...

    really really hope this is the fix... will post updates when I get them

    I am in the midst of rebuilding the UTM again [:(]

    I am about 80% of the way there [:)] the already half built one is pretty much always solid not sure if it has something about going from 32bit version to a 64 bit server or something?

    Oh well my network will soon be back to normal

    i use 64 bit by default.  It allows you to exceed 4 gigs of ram at any time in the future...if you run 32 bit and need to go up to or exceed 4 gigs of ram you have to reinstall.  Considering the realistic minimum ram requirement for utm is 4 gigs 64 bit is your best bet.

    sorry I should have made myself clear.

    The original config came from a 32bit machine, every other consequence install has been on 64bit...

    Something in the config is deff slowing down the WAN speed, as a fresh install will yeild better results.

    Anyways I have nearly finished the new installation, and just want to ensure that everything will work when cut over 100% [:)]
