UTM 220 and Memory

Hi all,
I've just bought an UTM 220 with firmware version 9.111-7. I'm making some tests and I've setup the configuration to use when it will became active for every users.
At the moment, with just one user connected, the memory used is 80%. Without user, 67%.
Basically I don't believe it is regular that just one user connected the UTM use 80% of memory.
What happen when 105 users will get connected?
Do you believe it could be possible to upgrade the memory or to reduce the use of the RAM?
The UTM making route for 5 different internal networks
I've setting Web Protection in transparent mode and Application control
Email protection is active (with single scan)
I'll use remote access (SSL VPN) and VPN Sito-to-Site.

    Hi ,

    Upgrade the memory will end your warranty and you will have problem when clean install because it won't recognized as appliance.
    My first recommendation is to do a clean install of the last 9.201 version , it works much better and it is much more optimized .
    And why a fresh install instead of upgrade ? That because the new SWAP mechanism that you can not get it with upgrade.
    From my experience 220 could be on its limit for 100 user , and I recommend instead of it the new SG 210 that have much more power and very good price.
     
    Try first to go to 8.201 and inform

    As I wrote I've just bought the hardware UTM220. After a few days I noticed that have been release new products. Anyway.....

    Actually i'm worried about the use of the memory with just one user connected to the UTM. Before I bought the UTM220 I read the "sizing guideline" and in the raccomanded users the document showed "until 150 users".

    I'll try with a fresh installation of the firmware release 9.2 and I hope the UTM works better.

    I'm sorry for the stupid questions, but after download the ISO, how do I load the setup on the hardware UTM? Just create an USB key bootable?

    Hi ,

    Connect a USB Keyboard , USB CD-Rom and a screen .
    After making a CD from the ISO , just insert it to the USB cd-rom and let if install.

    As a newbie, there are numerous errors that you can make in the initial configuration.  If your reseller doesn't have anyone with a lot of experience, ask Sophos for a reference to someone that does.

    Hi Bob and thank you for your suggestion. I use Astaro from 2008. I'm changing version from actual virtual (vmware installation) to hardware appliance.
    I'm not a sophos specialist but I have not changed my firewall rules and with Astaro 8.311 I haven't any memory problem.
    So I thought that the same rules may create some memory problem with the new version.
    Do you think this is possible?

    Yes, you should have been able to restore a configuration backup from your old system on to the new 220, and then upload the new 220 license. If you ran into any problems, like the memory problem, then you should get your reseller to open a ticket with Sophos Support.

    I fear that gilipeled is right though, and that you will have to reload from ISO.  Please let us know if Sophos Support comes up with a different solution - thanks!

    forget the dynamic swap that's not even a valid reason to get an appliance.  The dynamic swap is simply to overcome the ram shortcomings of the last generation(non SG series) appliances.  Swap=performance loss not extra memory gained.

    I'd also suggest the 220 will be at the limit for 100 users, esp if you're using all the facilities.

    The sizing guidelines, also recommend that each module takes up a certain amount of users as well.

    I'd discuss this with the reseller and see if you can update the hardware now as someones given you a bad steer sizing wize

    The sg210 is the bare minimum i would do for that scenario..however depending on module usage and traffic you may need to step up to a higher machine for cpu reasons.  If 4 gigs isn't going to be enough you will need a sg 3xx series box for the ram it contains

    I has the same problem, memory in my UTM220 all days is over 70%, i innactive a lot of modules that we don't use, technical support from sophos innactive the modules, but the problem continues. When i called to technical support they said my UTM doesn't support a memory upgrade, now is 2 gb.
    I guess they want that i buy another unit, but i don't think so.
    Can you help me what i can do?
