Sophos UTM 9.1 Soft-Release Available

I am proud to announce that after months of research, development, and testing that today we are releasing Sophos UTM 9.1. This is a major update to the UTM line that introduces dozens of new features, offers vastly increased performance, and all told makes the UTM even more formidable in the market. You will find an amazing new system for enforcing your Web Security settings on clients anywhere they are in the world using new functionality in our UTM Endpoint offering, wireless repeating and bridging for our Wireless AP50, and SSL VPN for iOS and Android, and that's just a sample of what awaits you in UTM 9.1!

The full "GA" release will occur within the next weeks depending on the results of the soft-release feedback. We will closely monitor this thread up until the worldwide release. To our energetic and much-appreciated 9.1 Beta-testers: we will soon be winding down our Beta Forums and will post more news there shortly.

A word on soft-releases: These are the intended release for GA, however we do make small adjustments and fix some additional bugs between now and the GA push via our Up2Date infrastructure. Soft-releases are considered production-ready and not Beta releases, however soft-release Up2Dates can only be installed by downloading them manually to your PC and uploading them via WebAdmin, or installing the Soft-Release ISO on your hardware/software and restoring a backup file from your existing UTM.

Full release notes, an official Up2Date blog post, some tweaked documentation, and other details will be finalized and communicated with the release of the GA version, for now, if you'd like to install the 9.1 release a little bit in advance, the details can be found below.

Virtualization known issues note:
There is a small problem which leads to deadlocks during boot-up on some versions of the KVM virtualization if the KVM instance uses more than one CPU. Workaround is to only use this version in kvm instances with one CPU.
The ISO installer sometimes hangs on start-up when using Citrix XEN. The workaround is to install 9.006 and use the Up2Date to 9.100 to run this version.

    What I meant was, that since it seems 9.1 is not "well cooked" yet, most users will hold them self for now from trying the new version (unless they are looking for "interesting" weekend), The question is - what solution Sophos has to those of as who's already affected by 9.100-8.


    9.1 is working well here...I'm having a dns resolution error that's affecting netflix randomly..but i've isolated that to the http proxy..aqnd have a workaround..other than that it works fine..ram usage is better in terms of swap...

    I expect it is some form of anti-virus, but I can't find anywhere in the UTM EP tab a mention of MAC OS deployment?

    As a partner i can run any configuration..[:)]  My "home" environment is more stressful than many "real" deployments.  I also have 4 other utm installations at client sites.

    be careful!!
    Trying to upgrade my system - run the system useless.
    The upgrade got stack in the middle.
    After restarting, I could log in, but it seems the proxy is out of functioning.
    Luckily it is a VM so I went back to snapshot I took before.
    Happened the same to a friend of mine.


    goldy.  The first thing i would do is create another vm with 9.1 from the start then try importing your backup.  If that works then there's a config or something in your other vm the upgrade isn't liking.  If you ahve tons of rules or a large logging database it's going to take quite some time to get the upgrading done.  HOw long did you let it sit?  also did you observe the upgrade with top in the console?  It may have been chomping through the upgrades..[:)]

    Just a heads up, they have made some changes in 9.1 and the mem option would actually load the database twice in memory. So around 650+ megs in addition to the regular http proxy load. If you have memory constraints, you may run into OOM situations. http://www.astaro.org/beta-versions/utm-9-1-public-beta/47209-9-091-bug-possible-memory-leak-http-proxy-when-using-local-content-database.html

    Edit: On my vm, it actually consumed close to 700 megs additional ram with local db in memory


    there's also the mammoth bandwidth issue now with local db as it constantly redownloads the db over and over again...[:(]

    I haven't tried the local db in the current version, but the re-download issue was fixed when they fixed the local database. Is it broken again? Try urid database in the mean time https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/80/t/65003

    That would be the Endpoint Sophos Authentication Agent for OSX systems.  Not anti malware related at all, just simply a way to authenticate devices using an agent, for web filter, etc.

    Ok ,


    There is an issue wi the SMTP proxy.
    Some domains does not get mail and the logs shows connection closed after mail FROM:
    We were hours on it with sophos support and Dev.
    There is a TLS problem on the proxy .
    Adding those domains to skip TLS in advance tab solve the problem.

    Has anyone reported issues with wireless using 9.1? I seem to be having more issues than before and the case with Sophos I've had opened for a while about wireless is just becoming a joke.

    At the moment it appears clients aren't being disconnected so when they come back in the next day or go out of the office and come back they can't reconnect.

    Before 9.1 we'd had random issues with some clients not being able to access anything past the UTM.


    Yes I reported it and uploaded logs. Also a poster in the Beta form also posted the issue. However I have not seen any reponse from anyone on the issue. I hope they are looking at this.
