uTorrent with VPN leads to UTM9 crash

I run UTM9 (9.004033) on VMWare ESXi 5. This is a home setup, nothing fancy.

The setup has been running stably for 4 months at least. In last couple of days, I have stumbled upon a strange problem.

I have Windows Home Server on which I installed OpenVPN to connect to a paid VPN service. The connection to paid VPN service works just fine. Then I installed uTorrent client on the Windows Home Server. For testing, I tried to download a file from torrent with the OpenVPN connected. As soon as I did that, within seconds, I lost all connectivity to UTM9. 

I could not even connect to VMWare server through management interface. When I checked the VMWare server console, it had the purple screen of death (crash with dump of hex numbers on screen). I had to reboot the server.

I tested the scenario at least 10 times with different torrent files, and every time I started download, either the VMWare server crashed or UTM became unreachable.

I cannot ping UTM, I cannot ping the management network of VMWare server, no access via SSH, nothing. The only way out is to reboot the VMWare server.

In next phase of testing, I started the download without making the OpenVPN connection. Since I had not created any firewall rules to allow torrent traffic, the download never started but there was no crash.

In third phase of testing, I created firewall rules to allow torrent traffic. Now the torrent downloads work fine without the OpenVPN connection. With OpenVPN+uTorrent, I run into either UTM9 becoming unreachable or VMWare crashing. The crash happens within seconds of starting download.

I am at a loss to troubleshoot. Even if something is terribly wrong, why would running anything on a Windows Home Server result in crash of UTM9/VMWare?

Any ideas will be appreciated.

    Do you have enough memory in the server? (check VMWare's memory information)

    What does the purple screen of death say?

    There is 8GB memory. 3GB is allocated to UTM9. 2GB is allocated to Windows 2008 R2 core which runs a DNS server. 

    Still the original question remains. Why would running OpenVPN in combination with uTorrent client crash the entire VMWare host? Running uTorrent download without OpenVPN works fine? I run the both OpenVPN and uTorrent on Windows Home Server. This should not have any impact on VMWare.

    I did not capture a picture of crash. I did not realize that VMWare asks to take a picture of screen. I thought that kernel dump will be written out to disk. Reading VMWare documentation, I realized that kernel dumps are not always written to disk. I will reproduce the crash and take a picture.

    Hi, it could be a hardware problem, or a driver problem.

    What NIC drivers are you using in the VMs? IIRC, vmnet2 or 3 are best, followed by e1000.

    I had downloaded the VMWare image so I used whatever was in the image. If I look at the adapters now, it just says Adapter Type: Current Adapter: Flexible. I am not sure what that means. Is it possible to change the drivers?

    Hi,

    The flexible drivers have performance problems. (I haven't heard of serious stability problems before, though.)

    It'd probably be best to build a new VM from the regular Astaro CD instead of the VMWare image. I don't know why they're still building them that way.

    I will try to rebuild from ISO. Somehow I remember that I did try that and there was some problem. I can't seem to remember the details. I will try again.

    The  crash seems to happen in a very specific use case. I am still confused as to why running something on a totally different machine would crash UTM9 to the extent that it brings down entire the VMWare host.

    The UTM9 software install knows when it's in a VMWare environment and automatically installs VMWare Tools.  I agree, Barry - why are they even bothering with a separate load for VMWare???

    There are two downloads of UTM9, hardware and software. Which one should I choose in this situation?

    I used the software download to create a new VM, restored the backup and tested again but the proiblem still persists. The NICs are VMXNET3. 

    At this stage I am thinking that this is somehow a VMWare issue. During normal operation, I noticed that even when UTM is powered off, I can still access the Management Network of the VMWare host through vSpehere Cleint. When the problem happens, I cannot even access the Management Network of the VMWare host. This clearly indicates a problem with VMWare software itself and UTM is not to blame. Somehow the vSwitch0, where all internal network devices are connected, is becoming non-operational. I do not know enough about VMWare on how to debug the issue.

    I will continue to investigate and post here if I find something.

    Could be a hardware problem with the NICs or server; try another server.
