Hi, unfortunately we have asg220 rev1, and at some point we bought 5 year license, part of license will expire in 2013 and some components in 2014. In future i bet on virtual appliance, because we are in process of virtualization, with pretty good hardware Dell R710, R720 and some 10gbe equalogic storage. With network pcix cards in servers + virtual sophos aplliance we can achieve our goals to protect external-internal network, av, spam etc. But i feel that our current asg220 will not live 2 more years, its already slow, v7 is max version , a lot of features disabled etc..and i dont like sound of hdd. In our country newer rev 220 box cost around 1800 usd. As i understand asg220 accept only "special" ram 10x times expensive than usual and shipping can be month or more, but what about hdd? Is there success stories to replace original hdd with ssd disk with built in garbage collection tech ? I think astaro linux will not understand trim, but there are ssds with some kind on chip trim, and these days ssd are cheap. SSD would speed up some log searches and overall responsiveness, less heat problems and maybe it will withstand 1.5-2 years. And maybe someone found compatible ram for that box ?
Now some other thoughts:
Of course i am looking for astaro/sophos alternatives, there are few really good and promising systems, like sonic-wall and others, all have some + and -, but astaro wasnt so bad, except 2 anoying things for ages - astaro ssl vpn client not working under user rights on win7 domain/workgroup situations and there isn't good workaround and second astaro ssl vpn client support for mac osx is just on paper, if you need working solution out of box u should buy that client for 9 usd, not much actually, but we paid 11k usd for 5 year license and 1k+ for box it self and support in our country takes ages, because of poor quality distributor. What future will bring Sophos to this product line ? Time will show...
