Home License Exceeded

After spending 20 odd hours tweaking my setup and battling VLAN problems, I've noticed a problem this morning....
I've exceeded my IP allocation, thou I don't even have 50 items, it appears that the DHCP server is occasionally allocating IP addresses to items that are listed in the static mappings, as such half of the active IP addresses are non existing IP addresses, but supposedly "Active"
Now I know that I can spend hours setting every device with a static IP address, but what is the point of a DHCP server then?
I also would be happy to pay for the web protection as all I need is to protect the kids, but I cannot find a basic price and the wife would leave me if I wanted to spend £1000s on a licence.
I have also noticed that there is a "Power Home User" but this is given out as a reward to people who help the communality, a positive step from Astaro but can you buy this?
I know that many people will say that 50 IP address is sufficient for a home network and I would agree, as long as the counting mechanism behind it works, but the people running Astaro arnt you typical "BT Home Hub" users....
But anyway, your feedback is appreciated.

    So, Corey & Barry, do you think my guess about his switch is correct?  The 24-port HP 9450A in Corey's signature is available new for under US$300 and has a lifetime warranty.  Used/refurb should be in the $200 range.


    If Astaro is managing the VLANs, and they're acting wonky, then I'd suspect the switch, although I suppose it could be a NIC problem in the firewall.

    If Ubuntu is managing the VLANs, then I don't know enough about how the network is configured, etc., to make a judgement.

    The 24-port Netgear 'smart' models start at under $200, fwiw. (my 8-port was under $100)
    I'm sure HP has better support options.

     Well its either the switch, or misconfiguration. Alot of people can misconfigure networks when using Vlans.

    I agree with what barry said. IF the config is correct, than its either the NIC or switch. it might be worth getting someone to look at the config to see if there's any inconsistencies.

    I got that HP switch for a great price through my HP contact, along with the lifetime warranty made it the perfect choice for me. Its dead silent and doesn't run hot at all, even during summer.

    So saying i was using the 8port for almost 2 years, but i needed more ports (got sick of daisy chaining switchs =P ). they do work nicely, and are abit cheaper than HP.

    EDIT: Im actually still using it in my master bedroom, its binding 2 ports for me.

    I think the general consensus is pointing at the switch, as its only seldom playing up.
    The Astaro itself is running on a HP ProLiant Turion II N40L MicroServer with an extra HP NIC, so should be pretty reliable.
    The trunk port is setup as "Trunk" which is 802.1Q compliant and the rest of the ports are setup "VLAN to Port" to separate subnets. I should really setup a signature..
    The HP Procurve switches are pretty reasonable but the cost massively increases as soon as you add gigabit or POE into the mix, better sell mine while there "Working" the 48 port POE procurve switch looks tasty but at £1500 - Owch!

    ummm, why would you need one for home use???

    also those HP N40L. They make great little servers =)

    48 Port POE Switch = Laziness, means I don't have to climb up into the loft!

    Yes, I second those little servers, a lot of people snub them for the dual core 1.5Ghz processors in them but its all the little bits like the star key inside the door and the spare screws, etc, all for £200 with extra RAM and NIC - Bargain!
    I was dubious about the throughput on my 100Mb internet but it performs wonderfully with AV and content filtering!
    I have three in total, one for FreeNAS with 4x 2Tb WD Green Drives and the other is currently redundant as it was running a Web, Mail and OsCam Ubuntu server but it really struggled when I gave it the job of running plex....

    Back to Topic, I think I will loose the VoIP subnet to help with forgotten VLAN tags and replace the Linksys with HP Procurve Switches.

    I've used TP-link switches (one x24 port and two x8 port models) with success in a home environment.  I specifically wanted managed switches to learn more about advanced networking topics and gain practical experience.
    I believe that there are now two managed switches that are quite accessible for home users in this manufacturer's range:  the 16-port TP-Link TL-SG3216 at about 130 euros, and the 24-port TP-Link TL-SG3424 at about 180 euros.  They have good features, 2 and 4 SFP ports which can be handy.

    disclosure: I don't work for the above company, and certainly don't dirty myself with shares in any business.  Just a happy customer.

    I've attached a couple of screenshots and the Active and Inactive IP address list
    I'm upto 83 IPs being used, but when I do a scan on the entire network, the real figure is only a measly 34 IPs!
    This is becoming a real issue and annoying as the figure is massively wrong! 

    Can you guys have a look and give me you opinion on where the problem lies or what the hell is going on.

    I can recommend the HP V1910 series switches; very affordable and work well... we use them a lot in SMB type applications.

    Hi Dave,

    The screenshots are showing symptoms but no configuration details.

    Screenshots of the VLAN NICs in Astaro, and of the VLAN config in the switch might shed some light on any possible misconfiguration.

    You could also look at the Astaro kernel logs for any VLAN or NIC errors.

    The switch may also have logs.

    Also include the DHCP settings aswell. Just to confirm its all correct.
