UTM 9.000 Soft-Released

Greetings! After months of intense Beta testing, we have released UTM 9 in accordance with our Soft-Release process. Formerly Astaro Security Gateway, UTM 9 is our next major release. Full release notes, accompanying documentation, and many other "deliverables" will be available on the GA date which is targeted for July 16th if the plan holds true. The up2date.astaro.com blog post will be larger and with more information, though some of what is posted here and the beta forums will be added to that as well.

For now, the Soft-Release is a full ISO only, and we also have available an Up2Date package for those running the UTM 9 Beta, hopefully by the time you are reading this. The plan is that we will release the ISO now, followed by an Up2Date for ASG V8 later in August that allows the one-touch upgrade for supported hardware appliances to migrate to UTM 9 directly from WebAdmin. Details are contained in subsequent posts below.

    I just set it up and installed it in a 20GB virtual drive, though I did provision some more resources to it just in case (2 Cores and 4GiB instead of 2GiB of ram). Seems to be working just fine, along with the v8 configuration. The web interface is MUCH faster now, which is very welcomed.

    Well the 4 GB and the 2 cores is a very good set-up. My v8 runs on a 2cpu 2gb setting. Thoug I have set the Astaro on 2 other cores than the win2003 server whcih runs on 4 other cores. [:D]

    How do you install from ISO on an ASG120? There is no CD drive so I am hoping through USB but can't find instructions for that.

    Do you have a VGA port?
    If not, any install is going to be difficult with the software appliance version.
    If you have VGA & keyboard, use a USB CD or see https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/52/t/27887

    If you have a paid license, your reseller should be able to give you a special USB stick.

    Ran into an issue with the software appliance ISO,
    asg-9.000-8.1.iso

    The following file name is cut off at 64 characters:
    /install/rpm/perl-Package-DeprecationManager-0.11-1.359.g9a593fa.rb2.noarch.r

    It should be:
    /install/rpm/perl-Package-DeprecationManager-0.11-1.359.g9a593fa.rb2.noarch.rpm

    This was causing my install to fail when looking for this file.

    I got around it by using a USB thumb drive to install and manually renaming the file.

    Not sure if this 64 character limitation is something specific to my machine, I'm using Windows 7 x64 with the built in ISO burner.  I also inspected the ISO with 7-zip and see the same thing there.

    Installed UTM 9 on our ASG220 (1GB RAM) last Sunday using an USB DVD drive and the appliance ISO without any problems. Managed to find a USB stick that would be supported by the ASG's BIOS to be able to automatically restore our V8's (8.305) backup while installing/starting up.

    Actually it seems to be running quite good even though RAM is always around 80% and we had a SNORT restart yesterday once.

    The only thing I found out is a problem are SSL VPN access certificates which have been generated with a real name that included German "Umlaute", special characters like "äöü". My workaround is deleting and recreating the user this time without the special character and replace the certificates at the client machine - haven't tried recreating the user with special characters since I don't mind (email address is without special charaters, too).

    Try using a 3rd party CD burner app... I recommend the excellent NERO Burning ROM product -- about $50.00 retail, and many drives come with an OEM version of it.

    I've had no problem burning the ISO, nor using it directly to install on an ESXi host.

    ImgBurn is free, might try it before shelling out for Nero.

    Regardless, I think Astaro should shorten the filename if it is going to cause issues.
