Extremely slow ping and slower speed through Astaro

Turboizzy, could you supply us with some specifics on the issue and box please.  With the supplied information everything suggested would be a shot in the dark such as the following.

Deep Packet inspection is taxing your box to hard causing packet latency
Your Nic(s) is/are dying replace it/them
You have a cable issue replace them

Are you running a hardware software or virtual Astaro and at what version with what you see as your current load when the issue is visible?
If it's a hardware, what size unit & revision ie a 110/120 revision 3
If it's a software unit, what are the specs on the system you have it on such as CPU/Memory/NICs/Chipset/etc
If it's a virtual firewall, what VM Software are you running with version number and how much resource wise is allocated to the virtual machine?
In any of the above, if you view your NICs do you see any RX/TX Errors on the nic?
When downloading, is it going through the HTTP Proxy?
If going through the proxy do you have Dual/Single scanning of downloads enabled?

Its definitely not due to limited hardware as I am running the Astaro with Intel Core i5 650 3.20GHz  and 3GB of RAM. This is the only VM on this box at them moment. There aren't any issues with the nics as I have 4 NICS on this box and I have tried all of them and I still get the same issue.

My Astaro is on a VM on a Core i5 650 3.20GHz ESXi box, it has been allocated 3GB of RAM. The box stays stable at around 15-20% CPU Usage and around 25% Memory usage under moderate traffic. 

All network traffic goes through the Proxy and I do not have scanning enabled.

What type of VM adapters are you using?  Try E1000 or VMXNET3.  I'm assuming you're Using ESXi 4.x or 5 (VMware is the only virtualization currently supported -- well, except for Amazon AMIs--, support for others is coming in V9).

It's very strange all traffic is directed to the Astaro however when you set the proxy config up in Internet Options ping seems to be extremely slow.

Going to move it to a physical machine today to see if that improves things

So we moved the Astaro over to a Physical box and still the same problem exists, any ideas ?

Hi, check your NIC duplex & speed settings, and also check for interface errors.

You can use 'ethtool eth0' for the former, and 'ifconfig' for the latter.

You should also check the switch or router or modem that is upstream.

These are both tools that are run from the shell.  Console or SSH.

what physical nics are you using?  also do you have qos on anywhere?  is ips set to any or external?
