How many NICs can Astaro handle?

Hi folks,

simple question: How many NICs can Astaro handle. Or is there a limit?

I am thinking about of reinstalling Astaro and adding as much virtual NICs as possible just in case for any eventuality.

Hope somebody can tell me this.
Thanks in advice,
Albeck

  • there's no hard limit but each one requires system resources to maintain.  Don't add more than you need maybe plus 1 or two.

  • I'm pretty sure, in a VMware VM, adding a NIC can be done later after the install... I'm pretty sure the ASG just "picks it up" after a restart.

  • I think so, too.  The whole reason there's an issue with adding NICs is because only the necessary drivers are loaded at install time.  If you have Intel NICs in a PC, you can add/replace the same NICs without re-installing Astaro.  I'm curious, you VMWare users, do you have to reboot Astaro if you add a NIC to an instance, or is the "new" NIC immediately visible?

  • Bob, I've always done it with the VM off... so I don't know the answer to that question.  I'm pretty sure you'd have to at least reboot.

  • Hi All,

Wie have User Systems in The past with more than 25 physical NICs.

The Configuration Maximum of vSphere 5 is 10 Virtual NICs, so we should handle that.

Yes, you need to reboot to do the initialization.
During that process only already known NICs get detected.

The only thing that you need to check is the sorting order of the NICs, as it can change after adding/removing NICs.

    Hope that helps
    Gert

And that's the point why I would like to add those additional NICs at the beginning. Because for example, at the moment I have 3 NICs attached to my Hyper-V Astaro, now I want to add 3 additional NICs, reboot the Machine and in the worst case all 3 old NICs could be resorted to the new NICs and I would not be able to acces the Webadmin anymore. Everything would have changed and no interface would work correctly anymore.

That is the problem that i want to overcome with adding reserve NICs as much as possible before the installation.

    Thanks so far, Albeck
  • There's no need... especially in virtual.  If they do get rearranged you simply change the order of the virtual nics inside your vm host.  I've done this with my hyper-v host more than once.  if this were a physical machine it's a concern but in virtual it's not.

  • I don't think it is that simple. If you have 10 Nics and they get rearranged and you have no connection to the webadmin then you have to blindly set them in another order and hope the best....with 10 Nics there are many possibilities so....don't think that will work unless you try all possible orders...
  • the chances of them getting rearranged in virtual are slim.  The only time i've had them magically rearrange themselves is when i not only added a nic but then rearranged their virtual connection.  IN my hyper-v host they have always been detected in the order of creation...unless i was screwing around..I think you don't have anything to worry about.  Start with how many you need..again every nic requires resources to manage..no need to waste them on this issue.

  • The Sort Order of the NICs is easy to fix in V8 ... just edit the file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules  when logged in (sudo) as root.
