Advice for virtualization

Hello, 
I'd like to make some tests in a virtual environment. Can anyone give me an adivice for the VM? It seems that most of people use esxi (I read that it is a supported platform). Other used (free) solutions?

    if i had to choose between only hyper-v and xen it would be hyper-v...right now mainly becuase hyper-v is suported and xen isn;t.  I don't run any xen instances anywhere.  I also do hyper-v or kvm or vmware depnding on the hardware used.

    I plan to use software version in a IBM xSeries 226, that comes by default with two nics. I have to buy 2 quad lan cards, I asked to the support for hw comatibility of intel cards (this page in knowledgebase is OFF) and they told me that "Intel® Gigabit ET2 Quad Port Server Adapter" is compatible with 8.20x. If my test with virtualization will give me bad results, I can run software version...

    ok on the x226 does it have a real raid card or not?  if it does then really anything works in terms of esxi/hyper-v/kvm.  If it doesn't then i would go with hyper-v or kvm...[[:)]]  I have not extensively tested kvm..yet i have a new host sitting here just waiting for me to test it..[[:)]]

    Yes, I have a ServeRaid controller! I will make some tests..... 
    Do you know if Essential Edition / Home User will work in virtual environment?

    all astaro versions have hte same code in them..it is jsut which security modules are activated by the license..in terms of virtualization they all support the same..[:)]

    Yes I know, but I know also that, for software version, virtual activation keys are different from software activation keys... so I was afraid that I cannot run home/essential in a VM.

    Ah, sorry: do you think I can install hiper-v or software version of astaro on a external USB drive?
