ASG 110/120 upgrade to V8 with home license

Hi everyone

I have been using ASG since 2004 but only till today I owned my first hardware ASG 110/120

It is running V7 so I decided to upgrade it to V8, I am surprised that the software security gateway installer does not allow installation on ASG hardware.

NVM I am downloading hardware image now but my questions is, can I use home license on hardware asg ?

    With regards to upgrading a ASG 110/120 hardware device; I understand that the normal process is to use an external USB CD/DVD drive or a Smart Installer USB flash drive, however, I have neither of these and I'm wondering if there is another way to do an upgrade / install of v8?

    Perhaps I could remove the HDD from the ASG box and perform the upgrade in another computer?  Maybe there's a way to attach a HDD to a plug on the motherboard of the ASG?  I see also that there is a CF slot on the mainboard, could this help me in any way?

    I realise that I may have to buy a USB CD/DVD drive, but I thought I'd exhaust all other options before resorting to that as I have no other use for one [:)]

    Any suggestions welcome!

    If you have a commercial license, and you're running the hardware version of Astaro, then you can upgrade to V8 automatically.

    I saw that, but I wasn't quite sure if it got around the issue of the ASG110/120 only being able to boot from a USB 'CD' drive...  Is that no longer an issue with that method?

    Also, to clarify, I'm wanting to put the home version on the ASG (I don't have a commercial license) and it seems from other threads on the forum that the best way to do this is to install the 'hardware' version of Astaro and then remove the 'ASG' file to allow conversion to a home license.  Will this still be valid in my case?

    On a slightly different topic, I assume that I could insert a suitable CF card and use this as the system drive?

    1. The bootable USB stick should work, but you will need a monitor and keyboard attached to the ASG.

    2. If the ASG is already running the firmware you want, you can simply rename that file and install your home license.

    3. A CF card is unlikely to be reliable; Astaro does a lot of writing to disk.

    It's currently running 7.5 and I'd like to update it to 8.  I have conflicting advice now as to which version to install (Hardware appliance or software version).

    You mean because of the write iteration limitations on flash media?

    The only difference between the SW and HW versions is that the HW version will support the built-in LCD, and the NICs should stay in the labeled order (maybe not in v8 though).

    You can install it either way.

    Yes, flash wears out, and most (all?) CF cards do not have wear leveling. SSDs do.
