Browsing Slowdown

I don't recall what the CPU is in the box. RAM is 4Gig of which I've never seen more than 35% being used. NICS: one is a 3Com and the other is a Broadcom.

I am running firewall, IPS, HTTP/S Proxy, AntiVirus, AntiSpyware and IPv6 Tunnel. The Firewall is running 16 rules. URL filtering is blocking 2 categories and one custom URL.

I had already found the thread about moving the filtering database and have followed those instructions (unless the power outage reset it).

nopers it'll survive reboots..or power outages.  put the machine's service tag into support.dell.com and you'll get the cpu type and speed

Dell information says the following for the processor:

Processor, 80547, Pentium 4 Prescott Dt, 660, SKT-T, P

ok that's a 3.0 ghz cpu with ht.  first trun off http proxy.  Se if web browsing improves.  if it does then the mem setting didn't take..re-enter that mem setting for the http proxy.  also turn off ips.  it has been known ot eat dns and that'll kill http performance no matter what you try.

Just an FYI, when you enable local proxy db, it must then download a 300mb+ database to your system before it will actually begin working.  Depending on you speed and concurrent bandwidth usage, it can take some time.  Hopefully, this is the reason for your continued slowness.

You'll probably find the issue with William's and Scott's suggestions; in not here are a coupla other things to try to help identify your problem:

• Slowness can be caused by incorrect DNS configuration.  Check that your DNS is set up similar to DNS Best Practice.
  
• Check that you're using the same MTU on your External interface as you have configured in the Sonicwall

I have turned off HTTP and IPS. So the only item left running is Firewall with 16 rules.  Browsing speed is still slow.

I checked the MTU against the SonicWall - they are both at 1500.

I have always relied on the SonicWall (and now Astaro) for both my DHCP and internal DNS. For my DHCP settings I have both a IPv4 and IPv6 range. In the IPv4 the DNS is setup with Astaro for the primary DNS and then OpenDNS for the secondary. In the IPv6 the DNS is only setup with Astaro.

In my DNS settings I have allowed "Internal (Network)" with OpenDNS as my forwarders (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220). No Request Routing entries, a couple of static entries (created when I added some static DHCP records) and DynDNS is turned on.

OK, It looks like none of us has hit on your problem, so maybe you have a hardware issue.  First, try changing the Ethernet cable connecting your Astaro to your cable or DSL modem.  If that doesn't solve the problem, go to 'Interfaces and Routing >> Interfaces' and edit the properties of the External NIC on the 'Hardware' tab to set it to half-duplex.  If it still isn't working, just for grins, try setting the MTU to 576 - if that works,then jump your way back to 1400 or whatever you can do reliably.
