Which Supermicro SuperServer for my Application?

Hi all,

I have a few options I want to explore and would love some input from the veterans here on the board.

I have a 50Mbps/8Mbps cable connection, 8 laptops (I have lots of kids), a few iPads, iPhones, 2 servers and 2 xbox 360s connected most of the time.  The kids stream a lot of video and music which amounts for much of my usage.  I do not plan on using email functionality but do plan on using IDS/IPS, Web Filtering, Firewall and occasional SSL VPN (2 users max)

I am thinking about the following options for my Astaro Appliance:



or 



I may also consider tossing in a dual port Gb NIC on the PCIe slot down the road.  Any suggestions for which one would to consider would be greatly appreciated as well.

I did some searching here on the chipset the i3 board uses and came up empty handed. I have seen a few guys using the D525 boards/CPUs but feel the 50Mbps connection may be pushing it a little hard.

    The first thing to do is check if the components are on the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List), https://support.astaro.com/support/index.php/Hardware:CompatibilityList .  Although much better in V8 than previous versions, Astaro still only has a limited set of drivers within and does not support adding in drivers yourself.  If a component you want isn't on the HCL, then it may or may not be recognized by the OS.

    With that being said,  either of the above items should be fine performance wise, although the i3 based system will give you more "power" headroom.  

    The only other thing that should be mentioned is that since you seem to have a large amount of devices, be aware that the home use "free" license is for 50 IPs and it does keep track.  Probably won't be an issue, but figured that I'd give you a heads up.

    I checked the HCL and came up with nothing on the Intel C202 PCH Chipset that is on the X9SCL-F motherboard.  I guess if I go with that one I will be own my own and just have to pray it works.

    Hi, I agree that 50mbps is high for an Atom, especially if using anti-virus, etc.

    If you can't get the system to work in a release version, you could always try the 8.2 beta, and file a bug report if it doesn't work.

    Hey BC,

    So here's the skinny. 

    These are both great rigs. IMHO the Core i3 is a bit overkill right now, and at the cost point to add the +/- $150 CPU, the D525 will work just fine for less. 

    My network is working optimally on an Atom D330, ASG v8.103, 2GB RAM, 80GB 7200rpm HDD. It is supporting 15x PC's, 1x ROKU, 2x Tivos, 1x Vonage, 1x Home Server, 1x Corp. VOIP ATA, 2x ESXi servers. My ASG is using pretty much every feature BUT the Web AV, i.e. IDS/IPS, Web URL, E-mail AV and Anti-Spam, VPN etc etc etc. All this on a 16/2Mbps, with 45Mbps burst

    the issue isn't cpu..that's work no matter what..it is the chipset and nic interface that causes issues.

    Also, your disk choice will be a bit on the small side, try for at least the 64gb or 120-128gb.

    Hi,
    I am currently running an AMD e350 with a 64gb ssd. It is running into storage issues, 26% and slowly growing.
    I have cut logging and historical reports to see if I can extend the period before I have to manually intervene.

    The ASG is not doing much other than keeping itself up2date and testing a 3G USB wireless card. It is reasonably optioned up with enabled features.

    So bigger disk is better within reason and cost.

    Astaro QA had very bad experiences with Supermicro, AFAICT we won't build our own Appliances on Supermicro for the foreseeable future.
