New Home setup

Hi,

I am now looking at upgrading my astaro home setup.

It is currently running in Hyper-v and is restricted to approx 20mbps throughput due to the legacy nics.

I have a couple of old pc's knocking about, and was thinking of using one of them to setup either a hardware appliance or vmware server 2.02 appliance.

Is there much difference in performance??

The two pc's I have are:

Intel 1.3 Ghz system 1Gb DDR 40GB ide HDD 2 x GBit NICs (Realtex RTL8169SC)
AMD Semperon 3.0Ghz 1GB DDR 40GB ide HDD 2 x GBit NICs (Realtec RTL8169SC)

I am due to be upgrading my broadband to 100mbps download and 10mbps upload, and obviously would like the new appliance to cope with these speeds.

Any ideas if these rigs would be quick enough??

Is the Realtec RTL8169SC chipset supported by astaro??

And help would be great

    Running a firewall inside of Win2k3 exposes Windows to the Internet, even if the VM will mostly isolate it, it's a big risk.

    I have now built the new gateway, opted for using the realtec nics first as the intel ones were nearly 3 times as much.

    IPS seemed to cause some performance issues to start with

    I added the relevent servers into the performance tuning part and it now flies.[:D]

    ESXi is not compatible with Realtek NICs, mainly only intel and broadcoms. And the minimum required RAM is 2GB. ESXi's RAM overhead is approx 700MB.

    What was your final system configuration? Just curious.

    The Final spec is as follows

    Fujitsu Scaleo J PC

    MSI MS-7181 (ver 10)

    ITE PCI Raid controller

    2 x Hitachi 80GB HDD's (7200 rpm 2mb cache) in RAID 0

    DVD ROM drive attached to Onboard controller

    1GB stick of Geil RAM.

    2 TP-Link Gigabit network adapters (Realtec RTL8169SC)

    Running ASG ver 8.001 wit 64bit kernal

    Running IPS, Anti Virus and Web filtering

    Did have some performance issues when I first fired it up, but never found out what was causing it.  Disabled IPS AV and web filtering, and then enabled them 1 by 1 until all were enabled with no performance issues.  Go figure[:S]

    win server 2003 is godly horrible in comparison to win 2008 server 64bit which is A must have. It is so much faster than 2003 its not funny. Also, when using speedtest.net turn off caching to get actual speed. Obviously when cached it gives false reading like double the speed. Thats what a cache server does .. Viva astaro.

    I've got a rather weak box running ASG 8.001 (see my sig). I've got a 25Mb/25Mb Verizon Fios line. Even watching HD on demand content while saturating the 25Mb internet connection barely touches the CPU or RAM. I'm not using AV or IPS, just web proxy.
