Install failed: base archive not found

Hi,

Today i downloaded the Free Home Edition & tried to install it.  After creating the file systems the installation fails.   Any clues to get this problem solved would be helpful.

    Same problem here, cannot install. This is on a Dell poweredge 1650, any clues?
    Get this error: the base archive wasnt found on installation media

    I was helping a friend with this error and we ended up having to replace the optical drive. Can't tell you how many times I've had to use different optical drives to get things to work (not just Astaro, lots of things).

    Hope that helps.

    FYI, you can also try burning the disc at the slowest speed.

    Same problem here.

    I tried these available images.
    asg-8.001-20.1.iso
    asg-8.002-19.1.iso
    latest_asg_v8_software.iso
    (All MD5's check out)

    Tried installing them in both 32bit and 64 bit

    I also tried burning them on a win7 machine and an Ubuntu machine, with different burning software and different speeds...

    No luck yet.

    When I look at the log file is says: 
    START screen 'inst_base'

    /install/install/install.tar: No such file or directory

    ERROR: The base archive wasn't found on the installation media

    ...


    I know Backtrack Linux has the same issue with burning speeds, but the burner and software that worked for Backtrack, doesn't work for Astaro.

    Any other ideas?

    More often than not I have found that it relates to the HDD controller "mode". Change whatever mode i.e. AHCI to Legacy/compatible/IDE or vice versa. This has fixed install files missing during installation for me 90% of the time.

    The second being the optical drive itself. But this has been incredibly rare for me. So I just took it ast a sign that the drive was bad and I just happened to be installing Astaro or anything else at that time.

    If this is a really old system, you could also try using a v7.5 disc.

    Well, I guess 15 times a charm...

    I tried different brands of cd's, different burners, different speeds on different systems...
    I also tried different drives on the system I'm trying to install Astaro on...

    ...and finally the oldest drive I could find (a 40x cd-rom player) finally enabled me to install Astaro using a cd burned on Ubuntu with 2x speed.

    i'm having the same issue (base archive not found) when attempting the x64 install via USB device that has been prepped with unetbootin, on a mini-box m300.  install fails right after formatting the logs partition.  Anyone have any experience with unetbootin prepped USB sticks and successful installs of Astaro v8.x?  I guess I can try to dig up some other sticks and try them, maybe the media is jacked up...

    Hi, christianbuia, and welcome to the User BB!

    Many of us have tried and failed to create a USB memory stick that can install Astaro.  I just don't think it's possible.  The only way to use a stick is to buy one, like the Astaro Smart Installer, with microcode that allows it to emulate a CDROM.

    Had the same issue where I wasn't able to image the SW version of 8.x onto an  ASG 120 v3 (although it would take UTM 9.x). Here's what I did.
    - wiped ASG 120 HD with DBAN
    - started installing ASG 8.305, failed with install.tar error
    - verified disk image and MD5 checksum, both OK, tried installing again and failed again
    - burned another 8.305 at 1x, tried installing again and failed again
    - started downloading ASG 8.202, while waiting for it to download I installed 9.005, installed no problem (expected performance issues with older hardware but was just trying.)
    - wiped with DBAN, installed 8.202, failed again
    - entered BIOS and reset to safe settings, failed to boot with video after bios splash
    - entered BIOS again and reset to optimal defaults, booted into ASG 8.305 installer, installer ran successfully
    - wiped with DBAN and tried installer for 8.305 successfully again

    Hmmm, maybe I can toss my hat in the ring for the title then Mr. Bob? Grab the latest ISO you want from ftp://ftp.astaro.de/UTM/v9/ then (on a windows PC, i used Windows 8 on my laptop), grab the windows version of unetbootin from http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-windows-latest.exe

    Now fire up the program, choose ISO from the near the bottom (vs. the live-downloads of linux distros), pick your downloaded ISO, and pick your USB thumbdrive (i used some kingston thingy). Let it finish, boot from the stick, and choose the topmost "Default" option from the UNetbootin loader which appears.

    From there, you should be golden. Try it out, let me know. Note that this will NOT use the CDroom boot object of your bios, you will have to ensure it is trying to boot off a normal USB stick. Don't fail that part [:)]
