64bit support has been in the linux kernel for quite some time and is very stable. I've personally been running 64bit linux since early 2005.

That may be the case for you, but, depending on the setup and variety of drivers etc., 64Bit Linux Kernel can't yet catch up with stability and compatbility of the 32Bit version. Especially support for edge-case usage scenarios like Bridging for example (I just mention this because it was the last 64Bit related problem I discovered just a week ago), there are still some issues with 64Bit Linux Kernel or the tools.
