Minimum Disk Space Requirements: 12 or 20GB?

Hey Everyone,

I'm looking at installing Astaro 7.5 (which by all accounts looks pretty damn sweet!), however I am wanting to confirm what the minimum disk space requirements are as I have found 2 conflicting sizes; 12GB & 20GB.

Why do I care?  I'm hoping to use an old 15GB SSD I picked up for free so that my firewall is A) Quiet, and B) Reliable.

So if anyone can enlighten me as to the minimum / recommended space requirements (& what may increase this), I would be most appreciative!

    I also notice that in the installation process itself the minimum spec is listed as 10GB!

    So can anyone tell me what the space is used for?  A standard install doesn't seem to use much space at all.

    This thread made me have to look.  Below is a snip from Wikipedia so it may not be 100% but it's likely close.


    TRIM has been integrated in Linux 2.6.33[26]. In FreeBSD, TRIM functionality is available since version 9.0. In Microsoft Windows, TRIM has been implemented in Windows 7[27]  and Windows Server 2008 R2,[28]  [29]  and was released with the final versions of those operating systems in October 2009. Older solid-state drives will need firmware updates, otherwise the new command will be ignored. Mac OS X  does not support TRIM.

    Where TRIM is not automatically supported by the operating system, there are utilities which can send TRIM commands manually. Usually they list all free blocks as specified by the operating system and then pass this list as a series of TRIM commands to the drive. These utilities are available from various manufacturers (Intel[30], G.Skill[31]) or as general utilities (hdparm since v9.17[32][33]).


    Also do note as of release 7.505 the Kernel is not up to 2.6.33 so unless Astaro back ported Trim support into their Kernel or has that planned avoid MLC Drives and use either a SLC based SSD or the new Hybrid SSD/Conventional Drive from Seagate, the Momentus XT

    Hmm, interesting.  On other OSs (eg; Windows) it is possible to run a manual 'trim' substitute utility to clean up deleted pages regardless of OS support.  Is this something that is possible with Astaro / FreeBSD?  It is possible however that this kind of util is hardware (SSD) specific.

    If TRIM is supported by the os it'll do it automatically during idle times.  Astaro in 7.x doesn't support trim..i'm sure you could find a way to run it manually.

    I did some quick digging around on google and found the utility Wiper and the frontend disktrim

    I do not have a SSD currently in any Astaro box I maintain so I couldn't tell you if it'll obliterate everything or not or if it'll even run on Astaro, so use at your own risk [:)]

    For the record, I've been running the aforementioned 15GB SSD for a year and a half now with 0 issues [:D]  Never run low on disk space, never had an issue with slow writes etc.  That said, I am running it in a home environment with only 3 (power) users on the network so it's not exactly pushing the limits [:)]
