No boot after installation of ASG7

Hi, 

I've already posted this inside the German Astaro Community but nobody responded after roundabout 2 weeks. So this is my last try to find a solution for my problem! 

First, I installed ASG on a PC with the following specs:
Intel Celeron D 2,66Ghz
ASUS P4P800-VM Board (Intel 865G Chipset)
1GB RAM
80GB SATA-Harddrive
onboard NIC
3 Intel PCI NICs

Installation went fine, no problems there, but after it needed a reboot it would only show 4 PXE boot straps followed by "no boot device". No chance of booting on this PC. 

Second try, different machine: 
AMD Athlon 64 2800+
ASUS K8V-MX Board (VIA K8M800 Chipset)
1GB RAM
80GB IDE Harddrive
onboard VIA NIC
3 Intel PCI NICs

same as above, no installation problems, but "no boot device"

I tried it with different BIOS settings regarding LBA on both machines followed by a complete new installation of ASG after every changed setting. It took me about 2 days though I had 4 PCs of the same type (at least for the last one).

After a few hours I checked some stuff with gParted live, and hit the "boot from first internal HDD" button inside the gParted boot menu and it booted my ASG. Although it works, it won't be an accepted solution since that ASG is out of reach most of the time and if there is some power loss or another reason for a reboot it will boot into gParted instead of ASG. 

So after all that difficulties I was thinking my CD might be bad, lucky me had a HP DL380 G2 at home
Specs:
Dual P3 1,266GHz
1,25GB RAM
4x 36,4GB SCSI HDD (RAID 0+1)
2x onboard Intel NIC
2x PCI-X Intel GBit-NIC

installed it, rebooted, and got the ASG screen. No problems here, so the CD I used is okay. 

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?!

    During the boot process, you can use Alt-F1, Alt-F2 and Alt-F3 to get more information.  Check Unofficial HCL List and HCL ASG V7 to confirm that your hardware is supported.  Others have posted about SATA controllers only working in a specific mode.

    make sure your sata controllers are in IDE or AHCI not RAID mode.  If they are in RAID mode Astaro won't see them.

    I tried it with a REAL IDE drive and a SATA drive aswell, other than that these controllers are set to compatible/IDE mode due to remote installing them with Matrix42's Empirum PXE routine. Either way didn't work.

    BUT!!! both machines booted using the method described above taking the gparted CD as a help.

    The VIA chipset which is in use on the AMD machines isn't listed in the official HCL but the Intel 865 is. So i expected it to work quite well.

    I also used different harddrives from 40 to 160GB with no luck in these machines.

    the method of installation could be the issue.  instead of a remote install try doing it at the physical box.

    It sounds like you've got a bios configuration issue (since you were able to use the boot menu and manually select the boot drive).

    I'd suggest resetting the bios (some boards have a jumper for them, others, you just pop out the coin battery for about 10-15 minutes).  Make sure the computer is powered off and unplugged from the wall when you do this.

    Once reset, try installing ASG (but don't make ANY changes to the bios, leave all of the settings factory).  Factory settings should automatically boot from the first HDD after going through the CD/DVD drive.

    not necessarily.  Many vendors now like to activate the fakeraid in their bioses by default..especially on the desktop class boards..it's seen as a feature.  Reset to defaults and then make sure the bios is set to ide/ahco and not raid.

    Since gparted is able to boot the drive, it sounds to me like Astaro isn't installing GRUB correctly for whatever reason.

    because gparted uses a much looser kernel in terms of driver set.  I still think it's a hardware incompatibility with Astaro and his boards hence my advice based on my experiences with Astaro's kernels..[:)]  However he says he is using a remote install through a third party solution..hence my advice to try the install while physically at the machine.

    I have never ever said I installed ASG using the third party PXE solution, I always used the CD, had 5 computers sitting next to each other on my desk, trying everything I could using IDE and SATA drives (SATA always without fake RAID and always using compatible mode). 4 of them were AMD-machines (exactly the same) and 1 was the Celeron box.

    You never mentioned you tried the cd....except for hte dl hp. Now then try disabling the pxe boot on the nics.  If these are onboard nics that will be in the bios.  If you can't turn pxe off make it the last thing in the boot order and put cd first and hdd second. 

    Might need to disable the onbaord nic and put in an another one that doesn't have pxe abilities as a test..[:)]

    If still nogo make sure you have the latest bios versions on the machines for the mobos.  If still nogo then something in the implementation of both boards ide controllers is not jiving with Astaro and they may never work.
