Hardware Upgrade

Jim, your reseller is the right place to ask these questions.  Depending on when you bought the unit, it might be upgradable.  If it is, then your reseller can sell you an Astaro memory upgrade for $100 that won't void your support.  If it's one of the very first units, then it is not upgradable.

PS The first place to look to decrease the load is in Intrusion Protection.  Turn off checking for things you don't have.

Also, in the HTTP proxy, you can set anti-virus to single scan.  One would need to see a picture of CPU usage over the last week to guess whether you are over-loading the ASG.

It's not the CPU; it barely rises above single digits. I had always assumed that the high memory utilization was caching, not services, but the warning has made me take another look.

It's about 4 months old--I just exited the warranty period.

I believe the hardware is supported as long as you have a support/maintenance contract.
The only exception I know of is if you are using a home license.

Jim, you don't need to turn anything off unless you just want to play with the settings.  The memory upgrade is a good idea for everyone, I think.

Since linux caches rather aggressively the memory usage graph would always show 100% if we wouldn't subtract memory used for caching. The memory usage graphs on the ASG show the true memory usage of the system and the services running.

I have an ASG 120 that we purchased last fall with 7.x and is still under warranty. I am getting the same message and I have a problem with a company that sells you a product 4 to 5 months previously then advises you to purchase more memory for a software upgrade or upgrade your model - Revision 7.306 to 7.4 
Surely going back 4 or 5 months, Astaro would have known that the current models being sold would not support the upcoming patches/features in the next few months. 
With version 7.5  and more new features will we need to upgrade the hardware memory again?
I think I will just stick with .iso's on our blade servers in the future.

Gfloyd, you might check with your reseller.  We install both the software and appliance versions of Astaro, selecting the one that is most cost-effective for the client.  If you want to stay on V7.306, or upgrade but not use the added capabilities of 7.4 and later, you likely won't need the added memory.

We also have both the software and appliance versions of Astaro in use. We bought the ASG120 for testing as a possible replacement for some of our older Nortel VPN routers at remote sites. We chose not to get the smaller unit, the ASG110 to avoid any potential hardware limitations for a small to medium remote site. I just think this was poor planning in terms of the hardware being sold back in November. I surely would not put the burden on my reseller for a product I requested. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to spend 3 or 4 days on site at Astaro with tech support this past fall so I was familiar with the ASG's but I have used the software image for several years. Spending $900 to test an ASG120 was not that big of a deal but it did make up my mind about using ASG110's or 120's at remote sites.

The company does recognize that the product uses a larger memory footprint than in the past; starting 2-Feb-2009, Astaro is selling the 110/120, 220 and 320 with double the memory of previous revisions (1, 1, 1 and 2GB, respectively). I have a copy of an Astaro memo from my reseller dated Dec 2008 that outlines the memory upgrade and (same) unit replacement upgrade programs that are now available.

I agree with your sentiment, however, that a unit purchased recently (up to 3-4 months ago) with the old configuration should be under consideration for automatic/free upgrades to the currently shipping hardware revision.

Not to muddy the waters, but my research indicated that the only difference between the 110 and 120 was in the licensing, not the hardware. Unless you had more than 10 hosts regularly connected, you should have been able to confidently choose the 110 and have no more hardware limitations than with the 120.
