Mini-ITX Atom MB

Hi Ian,
i am very open right now which hardware i am going to use.
My goal is to build a quiet low power consumption Astaro box to run 24hrs at home.
I was searching around for threads regarding to Mini-ITX / Power Consumption etc. 
During the last weeks i read a lot about boards from MSI / Jetways / Intel etc.

Most important for me is the Astaro compatibility and i recognized that some board memebers have problems with their NICs before V7.402 was out.

I hope/think i can build a fanless system using the Atom N270.
Will wait for some feedbacks until next week then i am going to decide.
As far as i see the Atom 330 boards are about the half price of the MSI Atom N270 [:(]

I installed the 7.402 ISO on my 945gse system last night, today I plan on restoring the backup with my VLAN config and hooking up my VLAN switch.

FWIW, any other atom board not using the 945GSE chipset is going to use 2-3x as much power. One site reviewing a 945GC board measured power draw at 45watts, although I don't remember what kind of power supply they used.
At the power rates I pay, the $300 I spent will be repaid in savings within 3 years.
The GC boards are available with the Atom 330 though, which is true dual core. For home use I think the 270 (with HT) is probably enough. Heck, my PIII-800 was good enough.

- Memory load
- Internet throughput
I would like to see the load with IPS, AntiVirus and activated proxys.

I don't use the proxies (except SOCKS for IM).
I do use the IPS, but not the P2P / IM security options.

I have a VOIP phone, but have not yet configured the VOIP security system (as I've had it longer than the VOIP security system and it has been working fine with PF rules).

I have HyperThreading ENABLED in the bios.
 
My connection is Verizon FiOS, 10mbps in, 4mbps up.
I have QOS set to the same #'s.

I have a site-to-site (IPSec) VPN to another site running ASL 7.3. The other site has a 100mbit connection limited to 10mbps with QOS.


It's probably rather early for me to report on CPU as I don't have any p2p traffic, etc. going yet, but...

CPU load is near zero at the moment, with the only large spike around 40%.

Memory usage is between 286MB and 337MB according to 'free'. (it's been dropping. maybe a pattern update was going on earlier).
I do expect that memory usage will go up somewhat as accounting data is generated, etc., but my PIII was always under 400MB except when loading up2dates.

Webmin is very responsive so far (MUCH better than my PIII-800 and at least as good as the dual PIII 1GHz).

Copying files over the VPN using SCP is getting 1.0 - 1.1MBps (8.0 - 8.8mbps), and causing snort to vary between 2% and 55% (of one HT) CPU. I did see snort hit 100% CPU for awhile, but it may have been loading new patterns or something.

Total CPU usage is less than 30% during these transfers, according to 'top', and is better than 80% idle most of this time. 

Note that with the Verizon router, I got 1.0MBps downloading the 7.402 ISO, so I don't believe the Astaro firewall is slowing down the connection at all.

Power consumption of the firewall is 16-17watts (according to my Kill-a-Watt). [:)]

Power consumption of my firewall + Netgear GS108T + Linksys WRT54G is 26-27watts. [:D]

The Verizon FiOS wifi router / firewall was using 13 watts, but it's now unplugged.

I have the Morex T3310 (fanless) case standing upright with the included 'foot'. So far it's quite warm at the top (where the DC-DC PS is), and barely warm elsewhere.
I did run it horizontally while testing the hard drive, etc., and it did seem to get much hotter inside, so I would only recommend using it vertically.

Going to activate HTTP and SMTP proxy. Let's see what CPU usage it will need.

Has anyone tried building an Astaro firewall based on Intel's D945GCLF motherboard and Atom Processor combination (see Newegg ad here: Newegg.com - Intel BOXD945GCLF Intel Atom processor 230 Intel 945GC Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo - Motherboard / CPU / VGA Combo)?

I'm trying to figure out how to build a low power (80W) unit using this combination, in conjunction with a PCI-based NIC card.

yes I have. The system runs with about 2 GB of RAM, with a MTRON 64GB SSD and a pci nic in the pci-port. I runs fine. But I have a problem, there for a will replace the motherboard D945GCLF2 over Intel support. After a new start the machine freezes (kapcid service takes about 100% cpu). After reset the machine runs and runs ... All ok. The RAM usage is about 20 %, cpu-usage is about 1 % at the main runtime. I will replace the chipset cooler with an passive one, the original cooler is very loud.

My chipset cooler failed, currently using the case fan to shift more air through while waitng for a new improved chipset fan/cooler.
The difficult part is when replacing the chipset cooling system is the clip which is a strange/cheap method because there aren't any improved thrid party units that I have been able to find.

Currently using a zalman blue chipset cooler which is just sitting on the chipset.

You could use "thermal" epoxy, but keep in mind it will be hard to remove once it's on there.

There's also "3m thermal tape" as another option.
