Jetway (via) C7 mobo + Jetway Gibabit module

I _believe_ you can do the following:

Get one of the Jetway JNF2 series motherboards (includes 1 10/100 NIC)
Get the 3-port NIC add-on (total of 4 nics now).

Get one of the larger mini-ITX cases which has a PCI riser card which, IIRC, can take 2 full-size PCI cards.

Install 2 PCI 4-port NICs.

That would be 12 ports.

Potential problems...
1. I'm not sure if 2 4-port NICs would be happy sharing 1 PCI slot split by the riser card.

2. 8 NICs (and possibly the other 4) would be sharing the single PCI bus, which would be a bottleneck at least if you're doing more than 50-100mbps per NIC (on all NICs simultaneously).


RAID:
The J7F2 boards support SATA RAID 0 and 1.
They do not support IDE RAID.
Also, I am not sure if the SATA controller works in ASL... someone had troble with it before, but maybe the drivers are in 7.1 now?
Even so, that doesn't guarantee that the RAID would work.

I don't have any SATA laptop drives (or a matched pair of desktop SATA drives), so I doubt I'd be able to try it, unless someone wants to send me some [:)]

VLANs would be an option, but unfortunately, I don't have any VLAN capable switches. But yes, that does appear to be the best option to reducing the requirement to have 12 NICs.

Bandwidth isn't really an issue, the primary reason for all the NICs is to separate machines for security reasons.

I think RAID is going to require an add-on card, onboard SATA RAID is typically software based which Astaro doesn't support.

That pretty much rules out mini-itx solutions because of the lack of expandability, will likely have to go with an ATX mobo and perhaps a low-power Sempron or similar. Could likely get the whole thing to idle under 70w which would be twice as good as what we're using now which draws about 150w from the wall.

I'm currently running a PIII-800 with 4 eepro100 PCI NICs and one 3.5" HD, 1 CDROM, and 512MB RAM, and an old VGA card, which idles (Astaro) at 50-60W.
If it had an 80+ power supply, laptop hard drive, ..., it could be lower.

I believe the PIII-800 CPU maxes out around 30W, but unfortunately doesn't have many power saving features.

I'd suggest a microATX (µATX) system with a laptop/mobile CPU.
Also, microBTX or AMD's new standard are starting to be produced.
Unfortunately, most new µATX boards only have 1 PCI slot; everything else is PCI-E... maybe you'd have to get full ATX.
Regardless, you can run mobile CPUs on some ATX boards.

just a feedback..
Today i got my Neo CV700A-3R10C.
Box looks very nice, put 1G Ram and 120Gb 2,5 HDD in.
The Speed of this Box is realy very nice (twice of a 120 box).
If sombody interesting of power consumption (PW Supply 60W), tomorow i can make test.

Looks nice... power consumption would be interesting, esp. as it's very similar to the Jetway's we're discussing.

From what I can tell, it's about 400 Euros, and I don't see anyone selling it in the U.S.

i run 7.101 on a piii 800mhz 512mb and when copying files between the lan and dmz the processor max out to 97-100%. the nic is an intel dual port 100mbps and the wan is an intel 100mbps on the motherboard.

i can't find any real info (speeds) about the bus the jetway has.

and having 1gbps in your firewall can't harm since those prices are so cheap these days. but it's more that in my work i see many installers telling customers that they NEED 1gbps interfaces while connected to the internet by only adsl with 2mbps down [:)]

i'm very tempted to buy a jetway kit since i quite like those small computers, but not only for a firewall but all my other servers too! make the electro bill lower and no more noisy fans. and no need for heavy ups systems.

Consider adding IPS exclusions between the LAN (source) and DMZ (dest).
