Small Drives

Hi Guys,

Is there any way of installing Astaro on drives smaller than 8gig? It's just I'm playing with Astaro on a machine which can use a Compactflash drive & it would be nice to use CF for the install, rather than dig out one of my old hard drives.

    If you can manage sticking with ASL 5.x, then I can highly recommend a VIA Eden solution.
    I bought an  EPIA PD6000E entirely passivly cooled CPU and 2 onboard 100MBit NICs. Perfect for this kind of appliance gadget.

    Regarding the flash based install, I was thinking along the same lines as you were initially, but unfortunately Astaro doesn't include USB support for ASL. Without the source code available there was little I could do to create a flash-based installation. I also tried creating a flash based install solution (to avoid having to use a CD drive in the box), but that blew up in my face since the install program froze at the third screen (HW detection). Most likely caused by the absence of USB support in the kernel.

    If you go with an Epia solution, you can make it silent from about 1 meter away. I used a Seagate laptop drive (real quiet) and a Zahlman fan controller, the latter which allowed me to slow down the case fan to a minimum (inaudible!).

    Here are two pics of my Epia based ASL boxen (1 , 2) using a Morex case (but you can naturally pick any you like),  placed just behind my 19" TFT monitor (yes, it's completely silent on the other side of the screen [:)] ).

    I just wish Astaro would continue supporting the Eden CPUs, since they really are great for this kind of solution (embedded) and are way cooler (more energy efficient) than the hot M-series (C3-2) CPUs.

    PS. I could have run this setup without a fan as well, allowing the case hole for the fan to act as a chimney, but I'm erring on the side of caution (esp. for those hot summer days).
