use loginuser, then 
su -

for turning off swap, add the command to the end of one of the init scripts, such as:
/etc/init.d/beeps

thanks for the help and suggestions guys. I have 85MB free ram which isn't too bad.

Keep in mind that nightly processes such as accounting and log compression need extra memory.

I don't recommend disabling swap unless you have a LOT of RAM.
(384MB+ for home use, I'd guess)
Disabling it probably won't make a noticable performance difference and you're risking services failing or kernel panics.

I ahve no issues with ram being overutilized....of course i have the netbios logging off which helps.  I have never gone below 65 megs free at any point..[:)]
