microATX - any recommendations?

ASL will work with MicroATX boards, we've had very good luck with the Via Epia 10000, 1Ghz Nehemiah.  That's the board that's in our smallest commercial system - the picture of the product is on the front page of our website.

I had a look at the Dell system you recommended to me on another thread. It looks a great box but it actually is quite considerably more expensive over here. It would be approx £500 delievered which is about $750. Whereas I think I can build a microATX box for under £200.

I just need to find some details on the cases now as I am a bit concerned that full size PCI cards will fit.

Glad to help out.  The exact model number of the board we use is the Via Epia CL-10000.  On the CL-10000, there are TWO NICs, and they both work just fine with ASL.  The board has 1 PCI slot, and you can add a third NIC if you need it, or a multiport NIC.  The Mini-ITX boards are definitely a low-end solution, but they're acceptable for home use and very small offices (10 or fewer users).  The low cost of those boards allows our company to produce Astaro-based firewall appliances that list for under $1k.

Where do you get thost MINI-ITX boxes from OfficeDefender?  The only places i can find are overseas..

The case is the Morex Cubid 2677R.  I'm not sure where they're available retail, we bring them in from a wholesaler out on the West Coast, and they get them from Taiwan.  If you'd like one and can't find them on the web, drop me a note at steve@officedefender.com and I'll pass the info along to the guy who does our buying and maybe he can help you out.

We are using an ASUS A7V8X-MX SE microATX mainboard AMD 2400 Thorton core (produces less heat). The only issue I had with the whole set up was the onboard nic shares the IRQ for PCI1. I just disabled it and dropped 3 D-Link 530's in it, works great. The whole rig cost just under $400 USD to build. AHANIX builds some nice microATX cases. Good luck

i am getting a bit scared of from microATX just beacuse of the cases. I have read conflicting reports that full size PCI cards do not fit in micro ATX cases. Unfortunately people chop and change their termonology between shuttle and microATX (not the same) which does not help.

I spotted the Q-Tec micro case which is very pretty and very cheap. Most micro ATX boards have 3PCI slots so thats not a problem.

As soon as I start looking at bigger cases i might as well choose an ATX motherboard.

Sorry, it was Athenatech case, not the other. Crazy little case with 2 3.5" pull out drive bays. Heat was a very big concern when I put this together. I bought a 1U sink/fan but when I got the case I found there was enough head room for a stock cooler, so it went in. It has 3 full size expansion slots. Here's a link to case. Run around the site, maybe the reviews might help you figure out what best suites your needs.

Hint:  if you're going to go Micro-ATX, don't bother with the fanless systems.  They all run slow (about 600 Mhz) and heat can't escape from the case very well, which can cause further problems for something like a firewall which has to run 24x7.  The board with the fans are the way to go, you'll be running at about 1 Ghz, and if you pick the right case you'll be able to add a PCI NIC card without a problem, to complement the onboard NICs.

actually what everyone is taling about here is not micro ATX but MIN-ITX..Micro ATX are what many small towers use....MINI-ITX is the VIA boards being talked about here..[:)]
