Slow Webadmin

I rather have small patches and I can continue using v5 rather than waiting.. From my point of view, things are getting better with each new patch not worse

IMHO ver 5 is a mess.  Little problems keep cropping up.

I'd support a release freeze until more issues are corrected, I can probably list over half a dozen issues off the top of my head.  It is not ready for a production environment yet, (at least not on my network).

I tried last Friday and had to pull it after numerous user complaints and unexpected behavior.

Probably have to wait for another half a dozen up2dates before I try it again.

I do use v 5.010 at home, but my setup there is of course MUCH simpler, and I have disabled virus and content checking, not using the SMTP proxy either.

On a side note, it would be nice if Astaro updated the "known-issues" document more often, (not just after up2date releases).  This would let us know an issue was being worked on, and what it's status is.

I might also suggest that next time, Astaro uses a "Closed Beta" test group, instead of public beta.  This would probably be better for all concerned.  I'd be happy to be part of such a team.

not sure i agree with the closed beta.  I think v5 should still be in public beta and get all these problems worked out.

For version 5, sure.  I'm thinking version 6.

After the huge discussion, here my results:

I had 128 MB RAM in my v5 pc (look above). Now I put a 512 MB bar in and Webadmin Tool is going much faster!!! No more waiting time at all. I think the swap processes took to much cpu power. Now it´s working realy good!!!

That's great news!  By the way, testing on our benches has proven that 256MB is the "practical" bottom limit of RAM for ASL 5.x, with 512MB being the preferred amount, which provides a nice balance between cost and resources.  Of course, anything above 512MB is gravy and should be used, especially on larger installations.  In our estimate, 256MB is fine for small networks (approx. 10 users), 512MB is best up to about 100 users, and anything over that should really have 1GB.

Actually in my tests it appears to be the minimum to START. I have 5.017 and its fine for a day, but after given a few security alerts the web admin slows to a CRAWL (so much so I though the web server wasn't working at first). It appears that a number of performance issues need to be worked out in this release as well as the claim 256 MB is enough RAM. From this entire thread and my experience, I'd say it is NOT. 

Rather than go through the trouble of upgrading RAM and wonder what other bugs I'll experience or find on forums, I'm going back to version 4 and look at five again when a few issues are cleared up and proper full testing is completed (I'd say from what I've seen it wasn't complete but I also understand marketing people always put pressure to release things BEFORE they are ready - MS still holds the world record on this one). I also have an issue with paying extra for portscan detection in v5 as it was included in the v4 core,  but that's another topic.

I have 320 in my box here and have not exceeded 250 except when i hit the box with 6 pop3 attachments around 2-4 megs all at the same time..then the swap shot up to 260 megs in a few seconds.  The system however continued to chug along without incident..webadmin was unresponsive until the system got through the large attachments.  I have also found some cpu usage anomolies that are quite intriguing..:0  I have a separate thread for that.
