Kernel Panic - Dell PowerEdge R220

Hi Guys/Girls,

Our server came today, went to install Sophos 9.2 with the ISO image asg-9.206-35.1.iso 

I get to the Black screen with the red writing to where I press ENTER to start installation and it then comes up "Kernel Panic - not syncing: attempting to kill init!"

The server is a PowerEdge R220 with Intel Xeon 3.4GHz Quad-C, 8GB 1600MHz RAM, 500GB SATA 7.2k HDD and an extra Broadcom 5719 NIC (4 Port) as well as the onboard NICs.

Brand new server arrived yesterday from Dell UK factory.

    Hi to all,

    I use FFTH connection, bandwidth are 400 Mb/s in download, 100 Mb/s in upload.

    I would be to purchase a Dell R220 with Xeon CPU E3-1200 v3 and 8 Gb of RAM.

    I would like to this hardware to install Sophos UTM on it...
    Don't want to use Sophos UTM in VM, but i prefer to launch it directly with build it OS to have a true Sophos UTM device.
    Sorry but i dunno how you call the true Sophos UTM (OS built-in with Sophos) and the VM version (Windows OS + VMware + Sophos)

    Do you know if this hardware is compliant ?
    Does this hardware is enough to use Sophos with all option (firewall/filtering) ?

    Hi TheDark,

    Not directly the same but I am using your server's predecessor the Dell R210 II with E3-1270 and 32Gb ECC RAM with 500GB HDD and I have Sophos UTM 9.315-x installed on baremetal. Runs beautifully. Connected to FTTH with 300Mbps/175Mbps and I can easily max out my bandwidth with very little effect on CPU or RAM usage. This is a killer server to use for high bandwidth applications and it is definitely overkill. I would expect your R220 to work just as well.

    If you have the problem described in https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/122706, rather than follow that original document, I did the following for all of the clients for whom I have Shell Access as root:

    cc set aptp status 0
    /var/mdw/scripts/named restart



    Just copy both lines and paste them in together.
