Important: ASG V7 End-of-Life on December 31st 2012!

Astaro Security Gateway V7 End-of-Life Reminder
As originally announced last year to our partners, Version 7 of Astaro Security Gateway will be end-of-life on December 31st 2012.  As this date approaches we’d like to provide an update on the options available if you still run this version of our product. If you do not have an ASG V7 installation you are unaffected by this announcement (and following ones) and can disregard it. If however you maintain an active installation of ASG V7, you should read on for what the sun setting on this version means for you.

On December 31st 2012, we will conclude all maintenance, security patching, updates, and any further kind of support for Astaro Security Gateway (ASG) Version 7. Before this date occurs, you should migrate to the latest stable version - either to ASG V8 or its successor UTM V9 that will launch in July 2012.  Customers with an existing valid license and maintenance can choose several paths for upgrading their installation to a newer version. For a complete list of current options, pricing, and anything not covered in this reminder announcement, you should always contact your partner or sales representative who will be happy to assist you in answering any questions.

Installations running an ASG V7 software appliance on their own hardware need to install an updated version and then restore a backup file of their configuration, which will apply all your settings except for log files and on-box reports. Logs can be exported in bulk from within the WebAdmin beforehand, while reports will begin anew on your updated platform as existing ones will be purged. If you have an Astaro Security Gateway hardware appliance running V7.510+, there is the option from the Up2Date menu to one-touch-upgrade to ASG V8. This will bring you to the V8 platform automatically, but will require further Up2Dates to be applied after the migration is complete to bring you to the very latest release of the V8 platform. This summer in July of 2012, we will release UTM 9 which is currently in open beta. This platform cannot be directly upgraded to from ASG V7 via a one-touch operation. In order to move from ASG V7 to UTM 9, you will need to re-install UTM 9 when it is released and then restore a backup file. Most features should import successfully, but for best results you should first restore your backup into ASG V8 and then take a backup from that platform into UTM 9.

This thread is for the purpose of posting caveats, tips, and questions about a v7 to v8 upgrade.

    I'll start the ball rolling.

    1)  Don't be blocked.  One of the most common gotchas is with binding Network Definition Objects (usually host definitions) to specific interfaces, as opposed to the default >.  When an object is bound to a specific interface, unsolicited traffic sourced from a different interface should be dropped.  In v8 this is strictly enforced.  Unless you know for certain that unsolicited traffic to a "bound" object will never come from another interface, you will want to change the binding back to the original >.  The number of recent v8 upgraders I've seen who are scratching their head wondering why the traffic they want is getting "Default Dropped" due to this is almost beyond measure.

    2)  Give it enough juice.  Make certain that you have the hardware to run v8.  The minimum recommended RAM for v8 is 1GB.  I've seen people run v8 on a box with 512MB of RAM in production and it's like watching turtles race.  If your own hardware has less than this, add more.  If you have an Astaro appliance with 512MB, we'll soon be announcing something to assist you (which will also apply for those appliances with 1GB RAM), in conjunction with the release of v9.  Stay tuned.

    3)  One-touch ... and a few taps.  After the upgrade process is complete, there will be further up2dates to install, which will take you to the latest version.  Install them to ensure that you not only get access to the latest features, but that you also have the most recent bug fixes.

    4)  One-touch vs. Reinstall from ISO.  Each has it's own advantages.  Personally I prefer the reinstall from latest ISO, as it will save you time having to install too many further up2date packages.  

    5)  Knowledge is power .  See what's shiny and new.  Read up on the release notes at up2date.astaro.com.  Interspersed through some of the release posts are links to What's New documents.  Very handy stuff.

    6)  Timing is everything.  For paid licensees, don't wait until the weekend of December 29th to do the upgrade.  Neither Partners, for those with Standard Support, nor Astaro Support, for those with Premium Support, will be too thrilled to be hammered at the 12th hour with dozens of "how to in v8" questions.

    7)  Who you gonna call.  If you have one of the rare instances of issues upgrading or post upgrade, everyone is of course welcome to post here on the forums for assistance.  If you are a paid licensee, with Standard Support, you also have the option of contacting your reseller.  If you are a paid licensee, with Premium Support, you can contact Astaro Support directly.

    8)  License and registration please.  Quite some time ago, we introduced a new format of license called OnDemand, as opposed to the older Classic license.  The OnDemand license is required for v8.  Login to My.Astaro.com to upgrade your classic license if you have not done so already.  Once migrated, you will need to download it and re-apply to your Astaro.

    One tip and a question.

    TIP: If you have a cluster, you need to be at a higher revision (7.512?) to be able to do the upgrade. This forced me to wait a month or so for the update before I could upgrade my HA clusters.

    QUESTION: Are rev3 (1GB RAM) units going to be eligible for some sort of upgrade deal? Our rev3's run v8 okay, but I don't think they'll survive v9.

    I would like to hope so, but I don't have enough details at the moment to guarantee it, hence the "stay tuned".  When the "something" is available, you'll be able to check eligibility on your own.

    I shall wait in anticipation then. I already have management approval to upgrade to rev5 hardware when licenses come due next year so that would just sweeten the deal.

    Would the same be true for 7.5 to v9?

    For 7.5x --> 8.3x, yes.

    7.5 -->  9, not really tested, but should work.  If concerned, you can go from v7 --> v8 to get a v8 backup, then go to v9.

    for anyone upgrading from v7 i would highly advise v7 to v8 then step through the v8 upgrades..aka v8 to v8.1.  then 8.1 to 8.2.  then 8.2 to 8.3.  Then upgrade to 8.30x.  then do the v9 upgrade.

    Looks like the 8.0x and 8.1x ISOs are no longer online:

    if you are upgrading you don't need iso's you need the up2dates

    hrm not good there's no 8.0 up2date either.  It looks like a reinstall for v7 folks..[:(]
