starting up - just starting out...clue please ?

Hi Folks.
Using a spare PC with ample CPU/RAM/HDD I installed the 'home' version, and then noticed that how it ID'd the onboard & plugged in network interfaces was not decipherable to me.

Since it ID'd one as an RTL I knew the MB had some RTL and I plugged the cable for the LAN there when it restarted - but couldn't ping it or reach it's IP via browser.
Proceeded to un- and re-plug the cable into the other RJ45, same result.

Questions, please (please be gentle as I've NEVER used this before !?):

1. Does the ASG require a reboot or manual entry of commands to change what is plugged into each NIC (so it logs in or whatever...) ?

2. When later one adds another NIC for another function - will the ASG recognize a new card and easily allow assignment ?

3. Precisely where might I find instructions for later adding wireless access in the house and also for allowing some means of file sharing for when I am at work, remotely ?

I ask some of this because I searched both sites and found no clear answers to the above - but also because it seems the KB is only accessed via search and there is no obvious listing place for docs that I could find....?!

    Hi, and welcome to the User BB!

    Most articles in the KB are in one or more categories; when you do a search, you usually can find a category result at the top.  A search on Web Security returns Category: Web Security and Category: Web Application Security.

    1. No.
    2. Astaro OS is not Plug-n-Play.  When you install the software the installation routine only loads drivers for devices it finds.  If you add another NIC that is identical to an existing one, the Astaro should see it on boot-up.
    3. Wireless: search here and ask questions when you're ready.
    3. I recommend L2TP over IPsec in North America because there are great clients built into Microsoft Windows and Apple iOS.

    Looks like I'd better add some info and refine my queries...

    Currently we are using a setup like this:

    Cable modem=>wireless router (set to provide DHCP)=>old PC as a firewall box=>switch where the several PCs plug in, each of which have their IP addresses set manually.

    The ASG machine is just plugged into the switch like the other PCs at present, but once it is configured it will (hopefully ?) use 1 NIC to the cable modem and the other to the switch.

    During it's creation/startup it suggested using IP 192.168.2.100 and not knowing -IF- that would work, I left it alone...because I sure do not know better !!!

    On the existing LAN the router is 192.168.10.1 and the existing FW is 192.168.10.2;
    The FW's 2nd NIC is 192.168.0.1 and the few PCs all have 192.168.0.x IP addresses.
    All things use the 255.255.255.0 subnet.

    That being the case - given my (VERY) limited understanding of IP addressing - is there some reason the ASG's PC cannot be 'seen' from my PC's browser or ping (with my IP of 192.168.0.10) ?

    Questions, please:
    1. If the ASG PC's IP needs changing do I have to repeat the installation just to change that - or is there some command-line method I can use right at it's screen ?

    In relation to the earlier question #2, please:

    To install a 3rd NIC later, would I have to back up my existing configuration, then re-install the ASG from CD to get it's drivers installed and to have it work then ?

    The ASG's external nic card should be in the 192.168.10.x range; the internal card should be in the 192.168.0.x range.

    I get it...just like my existing setup=> BUT[:S]:
    How exactly can I make these changes when I cannot reach WebAdmin from my browser ?
    Please, a method for doing this, exactly ?

    That is why I precisely asked question #1, above...[:O]

    If during setup you left the defaults so the IP address of eth0 is 192.168.2.100, you will need to manually change the IP address on your PC to example 192.168.2.101. 

    Then connect your pc to the astaro and access webadmin by going to https://192.168.2.100:4444 in a browser.

    I think maybe I've gone nutz...or I am speaking a foreign language today that even I don't understand...???!!!

    Folks - I know diddly about ASG - actually LESS THAN DIDDLY - I have a PC sitting at a command-prompt and ZERO access to the WebAdmin - so HOW=> PLEASE !?
    HOW...exactly do I make these needed changes ???????!!!!!!!!!!

    Sorry if I sound frustrated, but....I am !!!!!

    Wow. I am amazed.
    I got that doc last night - read it twice - now 3 times.

    Have you looked at that yourself lately ?

    It suggests that the ASG has a default IP of 192.168.1.1 and all the text following that is consistent with that erroneous information.

    The ASG set ITSELF by DEFAULT (for me) at 192.168.2.100=> Why ?
    How would I know - I'm just a stupid end user wanting a better firewall for my tiny home network.

    So, likewise - lacking for a college education in IP addressing, I've ZERO idea what I need to do to get my PC on the same network to 'see' that other IP.

    I can guess, and take wild shots at it, but is it too outrageous to ask for some knowledgeable man or woman here to actually GUIDE a total newbie instead of saying "Read the (erroneous) docs, AGAIN.".

    Geez.
    You could just tell me to go fly a kite instead.
    Just tell me to remove this thing (that I don't understand) and try to find something which has other users who will actually try to help someone instead of making them feel stupider than they already DO.

    PS:
    I can type ANY internet IP address into my browser and if it is right & exists I can view that - so why, please, with my existing IP address can my PC not visit 192.168.2.100 in it's browser - or even ping it ?

    Wow, ok.

    I did post previously, that if you set the ASG to have an IP address of 192.168.2.100, then you will need to manually set the IP of your pc/laptop to have an IP address in the same network ex: set it to have an IP of 192.168.2.101. Then connect your pc to the asg either directly with an cable or via a switch.  You will then need to access the webadmin of the asg in order to configure it via a browser.

    Have you tried that step? Are you then able to access the webadmin of the asg?

    Once you have reached that step you can start the configuration,process the wizard will setup the basics. The only problem I foresee is trying to change the IP address of eth0 it might not allow you to change it if you are connected to webadmin on that interface.

    I didn't see you mention that you had read that guide previously and it seemed you did not know that you needed to access webadmin from another computer in order to configure the ASG. Just trying to help didn't mean for it to seem like i was brushing you off.

    I hope you can see why this all seems so confusing to me ?

    Here is the crux of it for me, I think:
    I seriously don't get why I can instantly log into the router at 192.168.10.1 from my PC at 192.168.0.10 - but that I cannot connect with 192.168.2.100 (unless I change my PC's Ip address...) ?

    At any event, I have to go someplace right now and I'll be away from here for a few hours, so I'll try this some more later on when I've returned.
