8.201 - increase in memory and CPU usage, slow network to wan speed.

Been running astaro since April with no problems.

I have noticed that since the last update the internet would randomly hang for a few seconds. last time this happened, i SSH'ed in to the box and ran top, which showed postgres using quite a lot of cpu usage.

I have attached a screen shot of the "loging and reporting > Hardware" screen,  you can see there has always been spikes, but since the update they are lasting longer, and ram has gone up a bit. 

also, when doing "speedtest.net"  or similar service with web filtering disabled I was getting 50mbs download or close to that, now I get between 20-30mbs at best. 

is there any way I can undo the update without reinstalling?

    This problem has been reported by others.

    Unfortunately there is no rollback, you'll need to re-install from the 8.103 ISO.  Remember to save a config-backup to your PC, so that you can upload and restore it after the re-install.  You'll need to have one for the system version that you are rolling back to (8.103 or 7.511 I assume).  The config-backups aren't backwards compatible.

    Thanks for replying, I dont really feel like going through the time to re install right now, I will leave it for now and hope the next update that is pushed out sorts it. 

    Luckily I have all config backups emailed to me weekly so if i do go back I can restore it.

    Astaro box specs: 
    2.66Ghz Celeron 
    40GB hard drive
    2gb Memory 
    3 network cards (cannot remember the models, 1 is unused other as a standard WAN and LAN setup) 


    Features i use are:
    Firewall
    Intrusion Prevention
    Web Filtering 
    Network Visability  
    AntiVirus (Single Scanning)
    QOS
    Log Management

    It doesn't seem to be QOS related, I disabled it completely and im still only getting 30mbs download, with the CPU at 100%

    63% CPU seems a bit much??

    Hi Mark,

    Your CPU seems to be an Intel Celeron D 330/331, which is from 2004 and I assume that the hard disk is also an older 40 GB IDE.
    All in all, this a rather low powered box and your combination of fw, IPS, network visibility and web security is the maximum inspection you can do on traffic, means also the most resources per MBit/s of traffic.

    I expect that you see better performance if you disable IPS or network visibility.

    I would recommend you switch ton a smaller newer system with an intel atom d510/525 CPU and an small sata hdd, that should not be more expensive than 350usd and should power your needs today and in the future.

    Especially for business use I totally agree with Gert. AFAIK the Celeron D is a single core CPU, no 64bit support, no Hyper Threading and a small Cache with 256KB (Celeron D). And a "slow" IDE HDD also will not help a lot to speed up things.

    You also may preliminary give these tweaks here a try - maybe it helps a little

    If you're seeing CPU spikes in regular intervals, it's maybe the reporting in the background. Setting reportings databases to lower values (1week or 1 day) or also partial disabling of unneeded reportings also may help further...

    But a newer system definately may speed up things and also help to save some power. 84W TDP on the CPU for it's performance figures is far away from economic [:)]

    The hardware was able to cope untill the last update, there are only 5 of us living here. 

    I would quite like to update the hardware, but the rest of the family don't want to pay towards a hardware update, I while ago someone I know was selling a miniITX i3 combo for £115 which I would have brought but the family wont budge, is them paying for the electricity, but they still wont listen. 

    I read through the "Tweaking Astaro" page and it has a lot of good info, gonna give some of them a try and see if it helps. 

    I can't remember the exact CPU in it, all i know is that its not 64bit ready. 

    How can I set the reporting database to at lower intervals?

    The settings which you can adjust in regards to reporting can be found at WebAdmin>>Logging and Reporting>>Reporting Settings.

    Thanks, I should have been able to find that my self really. 

    I have disabled logging on features that I don't use, and reduced the time to 1week, to see if it make any difference.
