ASG on VMPlayer

Hello.  I have recently looked at ASG and would like to use it on my small home network.  I have worked with computers for over 20 years, mostly MS though some OS2 & u*ix.  I have reasonable basic knowledge of networking though setting up routing tables, etc at this time is done by referring to FAQs, books & assistance.

I have been using VMPlayer for a bit and have run it on Win 7 and Mandriva.  I would like to set up a MS box (Win 7) with a nice Areca RAID 5 and use it as a NAS.

I would also like to install VMPlayer on that box and then run ASG on VMPlayer.  My goal is to have the one machine work both as a NAS and a firewall.

As I envision it my cable internet connection would connect to a NIC in the box and somehow be exclusively routed to the ASG program running on VMWare.  I plan to have ASG serve both as a firewall and provide the routing tables for my external switch.  Therefore I see the output of ASG (I will not be using a DMZ) being exclusively directed to a second NIC in the MS box.

This output will then be sent to my external switch which then connects to my internal MS network.  I'm envisioning one of the outputs from the switch being sent back to a third NIC card in the original MS box that is running ASG.  This third NIC will then access the MS system which will primarily run the RAID and provide additional storage for the network.

I can draw a chart illustrating my thoughts but I think (I could easily be wrong) that my description is enough to describe my idea.

I would greatly appreciate thoughts, comments, suggestions, etc.

    My caveat: I tried asg in esxi and it worked fine, except watching streaming video, I would have the picture get very herky jerky and freeze every so often.  Not sure why...


    Let's see if I understand.  I'm proposing having a dedicated box with ESXi sit between my cable modem and my 4 machine home LAN.  This box would run two VM - 1.) ASG & 2.) some OS (MS or u*ix probably, though I am open to suggestions) that just runs a simple NAS.

    I'm thinking the internet comes in via a NIC, gets managed by ASG, goes out a 2nd NIC, is sent to my switch and from there is routed to the LAN.  Since I want to access the NAS on the same box as ASG I can put use a 3rd NIC in that box.

    Now I'll bet a pseudo NIC of some kind can be created on the ESXi box so that the output of ASG is sent to both the switch and the NAS but for now I want to ask dswartz for more clarity.

    Given the structure I describe above are you saying the video is choppy on a VM on the ESXi box or that it is choppy on the other machines on the LAN?

    Sorry for being unclear.  I have two nics on the box.  The first one is plugged into the LAN gig switch.  All hosts including my win7 box talk to that.  The second nic plugs into my WAN connection.  The only VM that sees that nic is the ASG, which is connected to both of them.  So, video streams into the esxi box from the WAN, goes into ASG, comes out on the other nic and goes to the win7 box.  Within 30 seconds at the most, I see the picture freeze (although still getting audio).  Every 10-15 seconds or so, the picture will skip forward but never actually starts playing usefully.  I have no idea what was wrong - I gave plenty of ram and cpu to the ASG VM, wasn't that, AFAIK.  Went back to dedicated firewall.  I'd dearly love to solve that, since I could get rid of one more piece of HW...

    I'm teaching this semester, recovering from surgery and have the summer off.  I have 9 Dell WS, 14 Intel NICs and my NetTrend GB switch just arrived.

    I am running ASG in ESXi on an old Proliant G4 server without any problems.  1 NIC plugs directly in to my modem, and the other in to my TrendNet gig switch.  I've done multiple streaming (netflix, youtube etc) concurrently, as well as extensive Bittorrent downloads with everything enabled on ASG and it does not even break a sweat.  I also have ESXi hosting a game server, and a Microsoft domain controller.

    Once you get ESXi set up, you won't remember why you ever wanted to run multiple physical computers.
