ASG 8 : Seems to need more Ram

Hi All,

I have a HP Proliant ML110 02 x 512MB, 02 x 1GB, Total 3GB RAM.
I did not get 4GB because I was told the Software version is limited to 3GB and did not want to waste the exisitng 512MB.

During the 7.505, my RAM Usage is 25% - 29%.

With the Version 8.0 ( I installed 64 bit kernel when it let me choose),

I loaded my 7.505 Backup and it uses 30 - 35%.

This increase in RAM ( while I still have a lot extra) is because Version 8.0 needs so much OR because now it is capable of loading more components to RAM since I have so much and should perform better?

The reason I ask is

1)  I do not see any obvious performance increase no matter due to 64bit or because it load more RAM.

2) Originally I recall reading that V8 should need Much lesser resources thus people with those Appliance should have better performance.

3) But looking at my numbers, does not seem that way.

Lastly, with this new 64bit concept, does that mean NEW Appliance Hardware will be coming soon that support 64bit?

    Remove ClamAV (Due to numerous false positive for me and a pain to contact them)

    HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP Proxy 

    RAM Utilization can drop from ~39% to ~29% ( ~10% )

    My set up currently for the Home version V8 is.

    AMD Athlon XP 2.6 GHZ ?
    N FORCE MB
    2- 1 gig sticks of MEM
    1 - 500 GIG SATA HDD
    2 - Nics
    1 - NIA  "Sorry for being Anal"

    Not to say that all systems are alike or that I get a lot more throughput but I average 1000 e-mail messages a day.

    I am hoping to put my mail server on this set up and give this Astaro set up to my more powerful machine with 8 gigs of RAM and 2 SATA 500 gig drives since this is doing most of the work for me and not as much is needed on my other server with all the other additions for my mail server page at

    Hi,

    Just to share with you all that upgrading to 8.001 would save 10% RAM.

    42% dropped to ~ 32% of 2.9GB ( I hate it does not show 3GB, just disturbing)

    Hi Alvin,
    I don't want to rain on your parade, but the ASGs always use less ram after a restart.

    I don't understand what the issue is with ram usage in a linux environment, now if we were running this system under a windows environment then I would agree you have cause for concern.

    Hi Ian,

    The drop in RAM usage is not due to a reboot as prior to the upgrade, I did reboot to see if the Ram usage would drop and it would always go back to ~40%

    Thus I was happy to see that 8.001 with identical configuration dropped in Ram Usage.

    Yes Ram Utilization is not a issue for me as I have 3GB, but I was just wondering those ASG Boxes with 512MB or 1GB Ram how will it perform.

    This way if I need to deploy at work place, I also will know if those ASG110 /120 with 512MB or the more powerful 220 etc with 1GB, how will it sustain or should buy own server and install software license etc.

    Hi Alvin,
    it really depends on what you are trying to protect?

    If you just want an easily managed packet filter based system then a small 512mb system might work with v8.*** but as soon as you start to add extras like IPS and the http proxy and users off course the ram usage will increase.

    First step in the decision tree will be how many devices will be using the ASG?

    Second decision what do they need protection from? Themselves then you need every feature on an ASG which of course chews through ram.

    At the very minimum I think you shouldn't settle for anything less than 1gb.
