DHCP Support?

as for DHCP server suport .. our firewall is not an application server, but a few people have asked for it, so maybe is is worth another discussion.

You could just buy a cheap router that supports DHCP such as the netgear RT311 it is about a hundred bucks and works good for this application let Astaro do what it does best and give some of the responsibility to a simple router.

FYI: Cisco's routers and firewalls and most others support DHCP on the inside interface!

Adding a DHCP server for your inside network would not make your product an application server. Add Apache to the outside then yes but not DHCP.

I have a request for DHCP client support, simply because I have come accross several of my clients who desire to use VPN connections, port forwarding for internal web servers, Mail servers, Terminal servers, etc. and The little cheap linksys and Netgear routers on the market seem to struggle a bit with some of the ipsec pass thru and most with the pptp encryption problems.  I need a solution that is easy to manage, configure, and easy on the pocket book.  If Astaro truly is coming with a DHCP client function for the external interface I am sold for sure.

I for one can understand Astaro's position on DHCP, both client and server, plus PPPoE.  These items are typically needed for smaller home and SOHO environments.

DHCP client:
If you are using a DHCP connection to your ISP, then I hope that there are no incoming connections, otherwise what happens when your ISP changes your IP?  Any business that has the money to fund further Astaro development will 99% of the time be using static IPs.

PPPoE:
Yet another hurdle to get your ISP feed working properly.  I don't know about you, but when I am setting up a system for a paying client, I don't want to have to worry about this layer.  I want to enter in the IP address and have it work without that annoying PPPoE stuff.

DHCP Server:
Any paying client will have at least one server system behind Astaro.  Adding DHCP Server services to this system is not a big deal.

With the "Black Box" internet routers costing only $100-200US these days, it doesn't make sense for Astaro to spend the time implementing something that will not yeild any significant return.

Again, these are only my thoughts.

well I really dont think DHCP is for SOHO users... I use DHCP in larger enviroments all the time saves TONS of time when making changes.  But yes i wouldn't really want my firewall to do DHCP I mean why?  Anyone who puts this box in a network is gonna be running a server behind it.. So let the server do the work its the application server.  And in most larger business you would run multiple servers with dhcp wiht diffent ips... So you would group them together with ASL rather then letting asl distribute all the IPs.  

least that makes sence to me.  And also the PPPoE thing is also something that shouldn't be used in larger business (and probably never will be).  But I think its VERY important to implement it in ASL.  I mean for the number of increasing PPPoE users it would be a smart idea.  Even if you dont make as much money every bit of income helps.

but in belgium some small offices of our use ADSL with PPOE on it to connect with VPN to our mean office, so i need it, also we hope we can test the dhcp setup also in astaro, for personal use, clients and people work at home 
Leased lines are so not any to pay  

currently my cable provider (AT&T-Narrowband) is requiring all users to use dhcp. After @home went belly up at&t switched all users over to another network and i lost my static address. They now require dhcp and the lease on addresses are only good for 7 days. You guys said the current ver. does not support this correct? I guess i will have to use another firewall unless there is an add on package.

Yes there is DHCP support its in the DOCs section under hacks.

I have PPPoE with a DHCP assigned IP.  I for the life of me can't get my ASL to work with it.  But I have it impletemented in a few other locations testing it now (thanks to there true IPs).  I am not giving up on ASL that easy.  I just HOPE they release ASL 3 (or a new beta) by Christmas.. be a good present for me =)
