in a virtual environment it doesn't matter if the vm doesn't see the ups. As long as the host sees it then once the ups signals a power interruption shutdown the host will shutdown/save the vm's. i have my host an a ups and the ups doesn't show up inside of astaro. i've initiated a power failure and sure enough the host shutdown the vm's cleanly as designed.
the problem we've fixed is unrelated to virtual environments. It's more like adding new types of UPS to the list of supported devices. I agree that a working UPS on the host machine does the trick, but we see no reason to explicitly remove the UPS support for virtual guests either.

Just to let you know the release 8.920 solved the issue. (for me)
The UPS status field is now populated and shows the actual status of the UPS battery life.
Notifications when UPS on battery and when power is restores are sent out.
BTW, next beta v8.930 will support additional UPS models that use the usbhid-ups driver of nut-2.6.2 (selected models from HP, Eaton, Dell, Belkin, PowerWare, Phoenixtec, iDowell, Cyber Power Systems, TrippLite, PowerCOM, Liebert).
