What is the new "Essential Firewall" Edition of ASG?

Hi there all, 

IT is a constantly and quickly changing field, and so is IT Security. Therefore it is important for us to reach critical mass in order to continue the success we had to date.

Especially in a competitive market like firewalls, where we see consumer products moving up to the SMB market we want to provide a professional alternative to those businesses who might choose a consumer product due to cost reasons.

Since its launch, the Astaro Home Use edition has convinced a big number of IT Administrators – some claim it as the "IT Administrator’s Darling" - at home and a lot of those installations finally led to new business. Following this trend we want to expand our reach, introduce Astaro to businesses who may have never heard of us and provide people who never thought of buying Astaro with our great technology.

As we are committed to this strategy, starting today, November 16th we will offer the Astaro Security Gateway Software in the Essential Firewall edition as a free tool for business use.

The Essential Firewall edition of the Astaro Security Gateway will be the first free enterprise firewall available worldwide and provides the following features:

  • Networking: Internet Router, Bridging, DNS server & proxy, DynDNS, DHCP server & relay, NTP support, automatic QoS
  • Network Security: Stateful Packet Inspection Firewall & Network Address translation (DNAT/SNAT/Masquerading)
  • Remote Access: PPTP and L2TP over IPSec support (including iPhone support)
  • Logging/Reporting: Full logging on local hard drive, searching, real-time reports for hardware, network usage and network security, daily executive reports
  • Management: Web-based GUI in local languages, setup wizard, configuration backup & restore, administrator notifications, SNMP support, centralized management via Astaro Command Center (also free of charge)

In the event an organization needs to expand the functional range of their Essential Firewall edition, they can easily upgrade to the professional edition of the Astaro Security Gateway by purchasing a valid license key.

We expect to generate a significant demand and new business by providing the Essential Firewall functionality of the Astaro Security Gateway at no cost to all companies. The Essential Firewall edition offers functionalities that are fundamental when protecting a network but does not offer all the professional features that are necessary to cope with modern threats. Out of this all, new business opportunities will result for us.

    Out of interest, is the fact that the Business Essentials edition is free just a temporary measure to boost usage, or likely to exist for some time?  I don't see it mentioned on the Astaro web site as prominently as it used to be, and thought initially that it had gone away until I searched the site for it.

    I doubt it.  If you examine the items that need paid subscriptions, you see that the Essential Firewall is really limited.

    Thanks Bob.  I just took a look at the BE edition on a test VM, and I see what you mean - none of the subscriptions are active, meaning this edition is very bare bones.  It looks like it's useful as a basic router, firewall and DHCP server, so a good alternative to a basic router from the likes of Linksys/Netgear, but with a lot of dormant UTM functionality.  I guess I thought it was closer to the home edition, where much of the subscription-based functionality is free, but I can of course see from a business perspective why this is not the case.

    Basicaly I need 2 features for VMware distribution:

    - IPSEC VPN site to site (with a Fortigate)
    - VOIP features

    My question is quite simple, is possible with the free edition ? Otherwise the pro edition cost 349 $ US ?

    I'm a very experienced Astaro Admin. I've installed the BE edition as a VM just to be able to see what it can do and run a MS test network behind it.

    I understand that it's limited. I understand that updates have to be done manually. Here's the problem: On the Up2Date Advanced tab, it refers you to the ftp site, yet if you browse the FTP site, all I can find are the ISO's, and not the incremental updates.

    Is the only way to update the BE edition to manually blow it away with the latest ISO file and then re-install a config backup? That's hardly a "manual update" process, IMHO.

    What's the point if having the manual upload tab in the WebAdmin interface if there is nothing to download that can be uploaded into the device?

    I tried going in via SSH as root and issuing the audld.plx and auisys.plx commands, but got rejected (presumably because it's the BE edition).

    A wget command to the ftp site won't even connect.

    So can someone please layout for me: what is the EXACT procedure for "manually" updating an Astaro BE firewall? i.e. getting and installing the incremental firmware updates, and not just blowing the whole thing away with the latest ISO file each time?

    The incremental updates are located in the up2date folder on the ftp site. Haven't used the essentials edition myself but I believe you just need to download the regular updates manually and upload them to the astaro.

    I believe that you are correct, i.e. that they have to be downloaded, and then uploaded into the ASG one by one, manually, which isn't a problem now that I know where they are

    If that doesn't work, I'll let you know....

    Might I ask for a single add on to the essential firewall. 

    I am looking to install this at our church, where kids get to use really old PC's to learn and look at stuff on the net. The issue is, it is too easy for kids to accidentally view material that is not suitable for them. Just ask my sister in law, who typed in di*ks.com thinking it would take her to Dicks Sporting goods... while her 7 year old daughter was in her lap! What an eye full they got! A web filter would have stopped that one. 

    Would it be to much to ask to add one or two web filter blocks to the essential firewall? 

    Adult material of course, violence, and any other non kid friendly content. Call it the Kid safe filter, or something like that. I think this is in the best interest of everyone, and really does not take away from the purchasable units value.

    That would be my only request. [:)]

    If the church had the money, I would just get the Pro version. [:(]

    While there are other free solutions out there, lets face it... Astaro is by far the best. Also, I do not know those other ones, and as a volunteer at the church who has a lots of overtime every week job, and goes to school part time, and is  studying for my CISSP... I am crunched for time. I know the Astaro well, and can whip that out in not time. [:D]

    Of course this might not be so easy to add, and if it requires a complete rebuild... never mind. 

    Is the essential still a manual update?

    Hi, FYI, you can use OpenDNS's filters for free; just have Astaro use OpenDNS's forwarders and setup the filters on OpenDNS.
