[7.900][QUESTION][ANSWERED] What about XEN paravirtualisation?

That was slated for v8, but I can't see it anywhere - so what about it?

    I'm afraid but support for Xen paravirtualization has not made it into the Beta.

    To quote one of our kernel developers, who was asked 'will there be support for paravirtualization with Citrix XenServer?'


    No, because Xen requires the 'dom0' support, which to my knowledge exists for kernel version 2.6.18 and for kernel 2.6.26 only, whereas we use kernel 2.6.32. We already support Vmware (both Server and ESX) and VirtualBox, and there are plans to even have support for Hyper-V in the future.


    While there are patches available for our kernel too, they simply don't have the necessary production quality yet. So we decide to delay Xen for a later version (maybe 8.1 or 8.2).

    As far as I can see, XenServer itself still uses 2.6.18.
    Running Xen Kernels I personally have used with it are 2.6.18 through 2.6.21 and now 2.6.31.

    EDIT: I just noticed: for what would you need dom0 support? You only want to run a guest domain, a domU, for which there is stable support in the mainline kernel, iirc.

    I can't agree with you there.

    XenParavirtOps - Xen Wiki states that:
    At present paravirt_ops is available for x86_32, x86_64 and ia64 architectures. 

    Xen pv_ops (domU) support has been in mainline Linux since 2.6.23, and is the basis of all on-going Linux/Xen development.


    And domU is all you need - where is the use of running astaro as dom0?

    As i said, there are various reasons. Most of them are only obvious to our kernel developers. Drivers are one issue. The other big issue is stability. The last time we took a look at the patches, they didn't seem to be ready for prime-time.

    And domU is all you need ...


    Maybe it's all YOU need, but maybe other customers want to run multiple ASGs on our hardware too. This is something we have to consider.


    So  let me state this clearly: We will support Xen, but it will not be during this Public Beta and maybe not even for the early version ASG Version 8. My guess is that i t will make it into 8.1 and then be fully supported. We're big fans of virtualization too, you know?

    I understand the other reasons for holding off on Xen (I've found it unstable as well so I run astaro on ESXi.) but the logic of the above escapes me.

    Why would a user want to install an Astaro domU on top of an Astaro supplied dom0? The whole idea of domU is to seperate the guest(Astaro) from the underlying OS. With VMware and other virtualization products it's understood that the Astaro image is at most a 'guest'. To assume otherwise IMHO means you really need to read up on what virtualization is.

    All that said, I'm really looking forward to getting my copy of v8 Beta installed next week on a new ESXi image for testing. [:D]

    I don't think it's a good idea either, but if they want to, they want to.

    Personally I don't even think it's a good idea to run a firewall virtualized for real use (for home use, whatever).
