HTTP Proxy Cache

On my system ( 3.4 GHz Dual Core P4, 80 MB Sata2, 2 Gigs RAM, 10 meg internet pipe ) web access is actually faster with the cache disabled.

With it enabled, I can watch the screens draw on the screen.
With it disabled, the screens just pop in.

With v6 ( same system, different drive (80 gig IDE) ) the cache was always on and the system did not appear slow at all. I never tried it with the cache off.

Is this something to do with v7 not liking SATA drives, or some other querky thing?

I'm just wondering though, as fast as it is with the cache off, how much faster could it be with it on?

Yeah, in theory caching should both save bandwidth and improve page load times for static content. It should definitely not make things slower!

If they (Astaro) get on the box tomorrow and don't find anything, I will try changing out the HD. Maybe it has r/w problems. It isn't making any "chattering" noises, but who knows.

If the HD was having issues, top would show it with high IO wait times and high load averages, neither of which seem to be the case here.

I have no idea then. But, since it works fine with the proxy cache turned off, I haven't seen anything with the beta that would make me go back to v6.

I think that I am going to turn the IM/P2P security back on tomorrow to see if it slows down the network. Turn a few things back on every so often to see how much the system will take before is starts to slow down. Then lock it down.
