ASL v5.0 Final Released!

I wish someone from Astaro such as Tom or Gert or Markus would give us some info re: IPS for Home/Power users [:)]

I for one need to be able to play with things at home before I get my employer to spend $2999USD a year for IPS. We have just purchased another firewall license, and renewed our unlimited IP Up2date, so I think it is only fair since I am getting Astaro so much money  [;)]  

Same here... My employer bought (on my advice) two $2999USD licenses. But hey! At least you have a Power ASL User license..... They refused my request...

WOW! 3 grand for the IPS license? Is that price dependent on the type of ASL license on which it is being used? 

Yup.. that is what the price is for our Enteprise box with unlimited IP's (now known as Unlimited Conc. Connections and Unlimited Users)... smaller licenses have much smaller price tags for the IPS. Ranges from $275 to $2990 based on your license.

While I have been a loyal ASL "follower" since v1.8, I am not so sure I agree with the seperate licensing for IPS. The Cobion and AV I can see as they are 3rd party products. But Snort is developed and updated by the OSS community for the community. 

I will still probably be able to convince my boss to spend the money, but it is going to hurt.

I have spent a long time trying to convince people how much better ASL is than PIX/Raptor/Checkpoint. But I know at least the PIX includes the IDS stuff. We should at least be able to enable it, just not update it. without the license. 

My two cents. 

I agree, given that Snort is Open Source the idea of being able to enable but not update sounds fairish.
Personally I'm rather dissapointed in this.  Waiting to hear a statement from Astaro on this.

I haven't even been able to test IPS on the beta really since ADSL was only fixed recently and I haven't had the time since that was patched.

I agree to your postings and I am also disappointed that they have disabled the snort thing. Disabling a feature due to 3rd party licensing is for sure but they should keep in mind that the most bugs were discovered by "Home User" because the have the ability to fumble around with the ASL. In a productive environment the danger of doing very bad things let the most admins keep their settings for ever and ever - okay adjusting spam rules or up2date things.... 

Pleaseeeeeee enable the Snort Feature for Home Users. They wouldn't disappoint you.

There is no licensing issues for Snort..it is GPL'ed..they can leave it on without issues..this is a business choice by Astaro not a licensing one. 

If we could at least enable it and manage/update the rules ourselves. I'd be fine with that. A tool like idspm should work in conjunction with a cron job possibly to perform any required chmod/chown and copy them appropriately then restart snort. 

I would love to be able to just enable it and manage the rules myself. I really wish Astaro would give us some kind of reply. 

I'm sure they're aware of the current discussions going on here. They're really good about that. Hopefully they are in internal discussions about this very subject and the wizdom of allowing home user/power users access to the IPS functions. We can only hope.
