LCD and Via Mini-ITX

You don't really need a monitor at all on the firewall box.

If the mainboard has VGA out, it will work on standard analogue flat panels.

The original poster is not really talking about a monitor.  Its a small 4x20 or so LCD display that connects via serial or parallel port.  You can set it up to display critical info or scroll through critical info.  This would be a pretty handy thing to put on a firewall.

Wish I knew of support for it.

Sorry, I was a little ambiguous.  Yes I am discussing the use of a 20x2 character LCD display made by Matrix Orbital (matrixorbital.com) in the Astaro box.

So far I've come across two areas of concern.

the LCD.pm perl module is meant specifically for the pyramid lcd.  I'm currently hacking it to work for the matrix orbital lcd.  The main problem here is the graphic support is very different from Pyramid.

The lcd-write application is meant for cobalt ... a similar perl script is meant for pyramid.  I've written an lcd-write equivalent for Matrix Orbital, however this is written in C.  The executable is not compatible between Redhat 7.3 and Astaro 3.x ... and there is no GCC for Astaro.  So now I'm stuck trying to rewrite this C application in Perl ... something I'm not that comfortable with.

You can download the "compiling stuff" for Astaro from http://asl.duncanthrax.net . I'm not a programmer (only a sysadmin), but I have a Matrix Orbital lcd. if u'll able to run it on Astaro, please let us know !

Got it working guys.  Let me see if I can boil this down to something doable for everyone ...

Assumptions ...
1. You have Matrix Orbital serial lcd panel
2. lcd is connected to COM2 (second serial port)
3. You use Astaro 3.x
4. You don't plan on ever using pyramid or cobalt lcd panels (doubtfull)
5. You are comfortable moving and editing files in linux.
6. Your LCD is 20x2 characters ...
   (if it is different, you'll need to edit /sbin/matrix-lcd.pl and /sbin/newticker.pl in order for it to look right.)

Tasks ...
1. Get  matrix-orbital.tgz 
 
Put it in a folder on your astaro server.  (I use scp and ssh)

2. uncompress and untar the file and follow the directions in the readme.txt

Hi, what does this program display?

FYI, I was able to get LCD4Linux  working on both ASL 2.x and 3.x

It can show network throughtput SUM only, 1 nic with modification, more with massive modifications. The authors are planning on improving this.
Also, it shows CPU util and system load, disk I/O, etc.

It simply enables the built in functionality of Astaro to display stuff on the LCD ...

It's moderately tame compared to some of the crazy stuff out there these days, like lcdproc and whotnot.

No graphs or anything, but it scrolls the details of file system info, interface configurations, processor load, and more stuff that I'm forgetting.

You can see what it'll output by typing newticker.pl on the command line of your Astaro Distro ... you may have to copy that /etc/ticker.config-default file to /etc/ticker.config .... NOTE do not do this after having install my hacks ... you'll break it.

Once I actually get an LCD (not just the Palm Pilot emulation), I'll probably do some more poking around for a good all around install ...

it just shows what I want to see.
Is anybody (sorry, but I`m not a coder)
able to merge this output with the 
http://lcd4linux.sourceforge.net/ project?
Perhaps someone can hack a little :-) 
(lcd4linux supports grafic and displays
up to 8*24 characters, e.g. used in Siemens
based phones).
A litte idea to the matrix orbital users:
Did a "newticker.pl > tty1 &" work?
