Sophos RED15W and XG

Hi,

It seems I can't find any documentation for RED working with XG firewall.

All documentation out there seems to be regarding RED and UTM. Which is Irreverent in this scenario.

I am new to Sophos products and I need some simple guidance with this.

After configuring RED on XG firewall, what UP Link settings I need to provide? Static/DHCP?

Will RED work behind bridged Router? If so, how will I pass PPPoE on to RED?

Found one helpful Kb: https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/116573 but its not very in depth.

any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Ray

  • I will add a second voice to this request for more information.

I have successfully used the RED 15 with no issues, but the RED 15W is totally lacking in documentation.

Currently, I have configured and connected the RED 15w but I see no options for configuring the wireless AP portion of the device.  The tunnel is up and any devices plugged directly into the red have access over the tunnel.  I cannot detect or identify any wireless networks that appear to be emanating from the RED 15W.

and of course, as mentioned above, any config docs or examples are relating to UTM or SG, but none for XG beyond basic RED setup.

  • Ray and Zane, this is a forum in the UTM section.  You'll likely get more help in the XG forum.

    Cheers - Bob

  • Hi Ray,

I have moved the thread into the XG RED  group. The deployment of RED is similar to what it is in the UTM. Define the RED unlock code and set the interfaces. The RED will work behind a bridged router unless and until it does not block port 3400 and port 3410.

After configuring RED on XG firewall, what UP Link settings I need to provide? Static/DHCP? I am not sure what you are asking here.

    Thanks

  • +1 from me as well - can't find the access point on a red15w.

Any how to on the way to set it up would be appreciated

  • I worked with tech support on this.  The solution:  make sure you are running 16.5 firmware on your XG.

the complicating factors that make this weird are this:

    1. RED 15W units were supposed to be supported starting with ver 16.  and technically they were, but there was a bug regarding the wireless AP support

    2. at least for me, ver 16.5 was not available for auto download within the XG unit.  I was trusting the XG interface to prompt when a new firmware version is available, which it was sorta doing, it just wasn't showing the latest available. Silly me, I should know by now not to trust the XG entirely.  Anyways, I had to manually download version 16.5 and upload it...and bang, the REDs showed up in the AP section.

I would also call this a bug regarding the firmware download mechanism, but I've learned that Sophos and I have very different ideas of what constitutes a bug.

  • Where might one get 16.5 from? Doesn't appear to be available from the Sophos website as the latest I can find is 16.05.1 MR-1

click on Support at the top, then still very near the top click on Download

    or use this link:

    https://secure2.sophos.com/en-us/mysophos/my-account/endpoint-and-server-protection/add-product-credentials.aspx

  • Ahhh, XG 16.5 = SFOS 16.05..... i have 16.05.1 running but still no sign of the AP. Does the RED need to be bridged?

If it does it will bring the challenge of the fact that you can't add VLANs to a bridge like you can on the UTM (yet)

  • ahh, sorry for the confusion.  you are correct, 16.05.1 MR 1

I am only running them in bridged to LAN mode, so I don't know about vlans as of yet.

after updating to that firmware, the RED devices had to reload and boom, I saw them under the Pending APs section.

  • Still doesn't seem to work with a bridge setup, and chance of some config screenshots Zane?

Red seems to connect and form a tunnel, but no AP.
