Qotom Mini Q170S (8GB RAM 64GB SSD CPU J3710)

Hello all,

I would like to secure my network at home with Sophos XG. I use a VDSL line from 1and1.

I bought the Zyxel VMG1312-B30A VDSL modem to establish the Internet connection.

Now I am thinking about what I can use as hardware for the XG. In my research in the forum I have often read about the manufacturer Qotom, but also that there are often copatibility problems with the network cards.

Here is a link to my favourite model: de.aliexpress.com/.../32790213756.html

Since I only have one LAN and WAN, I selected a model with 2 NICS.

Are the 2 x Realtek RTL8111E Gigabit LAN compatible with Sophos?

Is the hardware otherwise sufficient to run Sophos XG? We are 4 people at home.

Thanks in advance for your support

Regards
Marc

  • I've been running Sophos XG for about 3 years now on a Qotom Q335G4 with an Intel Core i5-5250U, 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD. I have a fiber ISP with a symmetrical 1GB connection and run a fairly extensive IPS policy, web policy, application filter and anti-virus scanning. The CPU load is usually sitting around 6% and I never see it go much beyond maybe 12-14%. No issues achieving the max speed my ISP offers.

I don't run SSL/TLS decryption and scanning anymore (too many small random issues), but even when I did on Sophos XG v17 (prior to v18's new Xstream architecture with FastPath), I was able to achieve about 500-600Mbps during speed tests. CPU usage for normal usage was up a little bit but still generally <15%. I do run the Qotom box in a server rack on a shelf, and I've noticed it gets pretty warm so I do have a small fan that helps cool it. I have no idea what the CPU temperatures are but it's been a rock solid device for me over the years.

  • So, I've been looking for the right solution for me for a while and now favour the following Qotom with 8GB RAM 128GB M.2 and Intel Celeron 3865U processor:

This should be better than my first suggestion and also comparable to the IKuaios.
Unfortunately, it only has Realtek networking, but that should hopefully be enough for my purposes.

If no one else writes that it's complete nonsense, I'll order it tomorrow and report back when I've put it into operation.
Thank you all for the support

  • Hello all,

The hardware arrived yesterday. First I had the problem that the installation did not go through, but after I set everything to legacy in the BIOS, the installation was without problems.

However, I now get a kernel panic when booting.

Here are photos of the boot process:

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Many greetings
    Marc

  • I suspect this not the answer, but the BIOS version is quite old.

  • I can't really imagine Bios either

Unfortunately, booting with acpi=off does not help either. Here is a photo of booting with acpi=off
