Noise level - XGS 107

Hello,

I’ve got a client with a very quiet office where we have installed an XGS 107.  Even though it is in the closet, they can hear a whining noise from it that winds up every couple of seconds or so, and then down again.  I can hear it as well.  It is a very low volume, but penetrates somehow, if that makes sense.  In a server room or behind a heavy door it probably would not be noticeable.

This is my first XGS unit so I don’t know if this is normal.  I do know that I never heard this sound from any of the XG units I have deployed.

my questions are;

had anybody else noticed this noise?

What is the likely source?  I can’t tell if it is a fan or HDD.  I would suspect that any drive is solid state, which would leave just fan.

Is this normal?  Might there be any settings I could tweak to reduce noise?  Possibly need an enclosure of some sort to dampen the noise?

thanks.

  • Hi,

This is how it used to sound (attached video link)? I hear a low-frequency whine sound sometimes. Not sure if this is normal.

    Unit: XGS 136

  • I had an XGS87 that had a. really annoying whine, and in their main reply, above, Sophos said they had some XGS87's and XGS106's that had a similar problem. As far as I could tell, there was a vibrational coupling between the chassis and the fan -- perhaps a gasket or something was not installed or wasn't correct -- and it caused a resonance that made the whine. It changed pitch with fan speed, and it would change volume a bit if I moved the appliance around or rested it in different positions, etc.

The whine was annoying because it was piercing not because it was overwhelmingly loud, you could hear it in the next room. It didn't seem to indicate anything wrong (like a fan failing).

Sophos replaced it and the replacement unit has been great. Just a white-noise fan sound that's not annoying at all.

  • This has been the case with XGS 136 (rev. 1) as well. I hear the same low-frequency whine noise on my fresh (new) unit I got recently after an RMA.

  • Hmm. This isn’t promising. As I look for a replacement for my older XG series desktop unit, I see this thread about noise. If the noise problem hasn’t been resolved (I read mixed results below), I’ll look for other solutions for the deployment in desktop type environments. Heck, I don’t want to put this in my basement and have it be this noisy, let alone my office

  • Hey Kevin,

I got a new replacement of the XGS 136 (manufactured in June) and it doesn’t make the whine noise anymore. If you place an order for the XGS models ask them not to send devices manufactured in September. I put my the device in my closet and I am unable to hear any fan noise anymore in my room.

  • I think it isnt resolved yet, i bought an XGS116(build Dec 2021) an measured the noise with my smartphone. The XGS116 is at 56 DB in the low range, goes up to 60 DB with whining noise, peak at 500 HZ. My old XG125 (build Oct 2018) is steady at 50 DB without any particular whining or peaks.

And yes i have reimaged the XGS116..i am currently using my old machine until the xgs116 is replaced by a more silent version.
